When you guys are talking about interior build quality what do you mean exactly?
I don't have an evo so I am trying to understand what people hate so much about the Evo interior! I mean... we're in an Evo forum and yet people seem to really hate this aspect of the car...
Do you mean the evo interior is not nice to look at? Or do you mean it is impratical?
I know that overall (statistically), German realiability is WAY overrated. In several cases they are far more expensive to maintain/repare even than French cars... (And at least here in Switzerland they are WAY overpriced... a Nissan GTR costs only 20% more than an M3 here)
So when you talk about "quality", are you actually talking about things not breaking down too?

Personally, I couldn't care any less about my interior. It's not a luxury car. It's a bit Spartan. Nothing fancy. It looks plain, the design is dated, and it's mostly pretty cheap plastic that rattles and squeaks over bumps and due to engine vibration. I will say the car is eight years old and nothing had broken, so that's a plus. All my buttons, etc still work.
Again, it's a performance car, so I'm totally fine with all this. Then again, I don't DD it.

The R400 is definitely a badass car and I love volkswagens but at $50k there is much better choices to pick. I couldnt justify 35k for a hatchback (Golf R) let alone 50k.

When I refer to the interior "quality" I mean the overall look and feel of the materials. Higher quality materials (hard plastic vs. soft touch) typically result in a nicer interior. My frame of reference for a nice interior is a GTi since that is what I had before my Evo. Most of the interior plastics on the evo are hard and cheap, the steering wheel is small and hard, the headliner is crappy, the visors seem too big, the ergonomics are terrible, no auto up/down on all the windows, the center display can't do a digital speedo, the stock shift knob, e-brake handle, and 08-13 radio are poverty spec. The 2014 radio isn't that much better. It just feels very low rent inside.

I think Im really this kind of guy that doesnt care about this kind of things... For me, a wheel is a wheel, and I dont mind material being cheap as long as It works and is pratical. Impraticality is the only aspect of what youre saying that would brother me. For everything else... I wouldnt even notice the difference ! And Ive been in alot or this cars with these so called "High quality" interiors... But thats very personnal I should show you a photo or my cars interior so you can see what I mean haha

Advantage, VW.

I honestly think those that prefer a X over an VIII/IX would prefer the VW even more, based on the reasons they say they prefer the X. Since this is a "trade X for VW" thread, I'd imagine build quality and aesthetics would have to matter here.

Your car is not an Evo, so it's hard to compare for the sake of discussion. From what I've seen over the past few years, your typical X owner would most likely also totally dig the VW (as demonstrated by OP), so this is a valid decision. If I owned a X, I'd rather have the VW. Preference, of course.

My car is not an evo, it's FAR FAR worse in the interior. It's a low priced Nissan Primera from 1999 with lot's of cheap addons I bought from china (cupholders, 40$ GPS etc...) It looks HORRIBLE lol But guess what? I love it! Because everything is pratical
My dad has a Pug 407. Believe or not, french cars have really "high quality" "refined" interiors and my dad's car is not exeption to that! I use it very often too.
I don't find that any of the "luxury" or "good material" inside his car make it any more pratical. It just... looks good. But that's something I only care from the outside of the car
And I know that my dad doesn't care much about this either (hence being interested in the Evo), so don't start saying that it's because I'm too young to understand
It's just another way of looking at things I guess

My post sounded condescending, sorry. Maybe I should have said a X specifically. I just meant that people like us don't care about these things but I think the typical X owner probably does.

I thought the GTi that I had was better in almost every other way besides pure performance. I wanted a more exciting second car and the Evo fit the bill better. My thoughts are that for 35k it should be possible to have the performance of an Evo with the interior of the VW but that just hasn't happened yet. I would really like to get into a new Golf R but it is still going to be a downgrade from the Evo performance wise.

i agree. for the sticker price of a X i'd expect a lot more performance or a lot more luxury, but you really get neither. the car is kinda stuck in between. if you add more amenities, then you add weight which would put the car more in the GT category, but down on power. if you get rid of the few fancy bits it has, in the name of performance, then you end up with a car that only fits a niche market. with the X, i think Mitsu was trying to make everyone happy.
it sounds like the Golf R would have plenty of performance but still be very comfortable; doing what the Evo X did, but better..hence the pricing, i suppose.
i guess it comes down to: do you want an okay car or a better car as well as "how much are you willing to spend?".

even used, they still seem to be doing for $70k or so. maybe if you found one that's been abused a bit. with no warranty.

Or you could say you get a bit of both with the X. It's just a way of putting things If you people don't like the Evo interior and feel it's something important for you, why don't you just buy the german equivalents? It seems like you can get these for the same price as the evo in the US. They handle alot worse but they have everything you are talking about. Get a M135i or an S3!
