Evo VIII and turbo/engine time question
Hey, sup guys,
Um just a question about those turbo/engine timers.
I am thinking about getting one through boost solutions in Atlanta, GA because the sitting in the car for 2-3 minutes and waiting for the turbo to spool down is very annoying.
Just wondering if getting one will void my warrantee. I have a stock turbo with a boost gauge, and am not thinking about modifying it for at least a year or so, so i can at least enjoy the warranty u know.
I dunno if that timer would void it because isn't it just a tap into the electrical system?? like switching a head unit or something?? i dont know, pretty newbie about cars.
Thanks for the help,
mike

Search for topics on turbo timers.. many people have them, however our turbos are oil and water cooled.. Its not necessary to let the turbo idle for a few minutes anymore.. Usually driving slow for 30 seconds, or idling for 20-30 seconds is more than adequate.. Its only necessary to idle the car for a minute or so (If that) after running the car hard, but its likely that you'd probably be driving slowly before parking afterward anyway.
I personally think the Turbo Timer is a waste of money.. unless your the kind of person to starts your car, not wait for it to warm up.. drive it hard, then just shut it off..

Hey, thanks for the help, but now i am confused,
First at the dealer when i bought the car, the manager told me that i need to wait a couple of minutes before shutting the car off. Then at Boost Solutions (when I installed the boost gauge) the technician said that you need to wait for 2-3 minutes also for the turbo to spool down or you need to oil your turbo after a short time and your car will not last long...
so what is the real thing now?? do I need to wait or get turbo timer, or is it really a 30s cool down while driving slow and I can just turn the car off??
Thanks very much,
mike

At one time it was necessary, but on newer cars, and with synthetic oil, you won't have a problem if you shut it down after 30 seconds..
They probably meant to do that if you have been driving the car hard, when the oil temps and the exhaust system temps(turbo housing) get very high, then you want to let the car idle so it sheds as much heat as possible before shutting it down.
However if the car has been run normally, and your basically idling around finding a parking spot, there's very little difference if you wait 15 seconds or 3 minutes..
But yeah, if your driving slowly finding a place to park.. you just park, let it idle for a few seconds (15 seconds if you feel you haven't had enough idle time) and shut it off..
I take most of what the dealer tells people with a grain of salt.. Some of it is lack of knowledge, some of it is their, "Don't forget to let it idle for 3 minutes, OR if you want we can install this turbo timer for you" Sales pitch..

turbo timers help.... the turbo's are still oil cooled, turning off the engine too soon can still ruin the bearings because the oil doesnt flow through the turbo anymore, instead, just sitting on the bearings and burning the oil. No reason not to get one, properly installed, they work well.

I'm not 100% sure, I have been told by some that it will not. However it depends on the dealer, and the warranty issues you might have with it installed (not issues caused by it.. any modification that can be determined to cause damage to something would likely void that portion of the warranty)
If the dealer has offered to install a turbo timer and you really feel you need one, then its best to have them install it (if its not rediculously expensive) since they can't complain about something they installed for you.
I still think their a waste of money and not necessary. But do your research and make the ultimate decision.. There's enough threads floating around that you can search for.
