4G63 vs. MIVEC?
4G63 vs. MIVEC?
Will it starting to seem more and more likely that the EVO IX will have the MIVEC engine, and I was just wondering what will this mean as far as tuning goes? We all know about the legendary 4G63 and it's capabilities, it's truly going to be a hard engine to replace, is the MIVEC up to the task? Will the MIVEC be just a s easy or easier to tune, and will it in the long run have more potential or will the new EVOs suffer the troubles similiar to the USDM STi?
heres my feelings i voted no.. because the 4g63 has been around FOREVER... and its PROVEN... the MIVEC will be like the 2.5l usdm sti.. not proven, but i'm sure its going to be a GREAT engine, cause why would mitsubishi replace the heart and soul of all the evos with somethign that won't compete... but since theres no 9's on us soil to test and compare, i'm saying NO, for now until theres the 9 on us soil..
Alright heres the deal. The MIVEC found in the IX wont be anything like the one found in the ralliart. It will contain DOHC with forged internals to handle the boost, the only difference is the cam profiles will change above 3500 RPMS (when boost kicks in) to give you more power available when you need to go. Its based on the 4G63 platform, it will look almost exactly alike and you will notice no decrease at all in performance. All this is why i said yes in the poll.
essentially, the evolution IX will have a 4G63 featuring a MIVEC head.
they're not changing the block, they're merely modifying the head to offer us variable valve timing. this might not be such a bad idea considering the aggressive camshaft profiles most of us like the use (i.e.- hks 272's).
i am more worried about the change that will take place in the evolution X. supposedly going to be a whole new engine. i for one, love the 4G63 and dont want to see it go. i hope this MIVEC 4G63 is just a tuner friendly, 'evolved' (pun-intended) version of our epic bulletproof engine.

Christ, its still going to be a 4G63! The MIVEC will just supply better lowend tq to counter the lag and more aggressive camshaft timing at high rpms when under boost. What is there not to like? The only downside I can think of is we will have to wait a little while until the aftermarket can supply us with more aggressive MIVEC cams. I vote 4G63T MIVEC!
They don't call it an Evolution for nothing. All great cars evolve, hopefully for the better. The 4G63 is an amazing power plant with more power to still be expoited. Subaru needed more displacement to beat it. A better head sounds like a great improvement, and if it can be tuned easily, that is even better. Any engine replacement had better yield more HP and torque, and be equally as indestructable.

just remember to the evo IX engine is still the 4g63. they are just adding MIVEC to it. so im surprised its not getting more votes yes. now the evo X is gonna have a completely different engine. the evo IX will be the last run of the 4g63
I think that the car should have insane "pull" and a smoother torque curve with the variable valve head.
Tuning will probably have to be modefied in several areas, but I think the aftermarket will step up.
Vote: Yes - I expect it to be a good step forward.
