4G63 vs. MIVEC?
Back on topic. Yes it is cast-iron. Yes it's still a 4G63, it just has MIVEC to vary cam timing.
For the next 100 people that ask:
Yes, it's cast-iron not aluminum. Yes it's still a 4G63, it just has MIVEC to vary cam timing.

Thanks for the info machron1. I'm glad to hear it'll still be good 'ol iron. By the way, jw, where did you get all this info from about the new evo? You seem to be one of the only ones on this thread that truely know a lot about it and know what your talking about.

There are three basic block configurations. Closed deck, Semi closed deck and Open deck. The US STI is Semi closed deck. The US WRX is open deck. The switch to open deck or semi closed deck was also for emissions and effeciency. With water surounding and cooling the bores the detonation threashold is raised allowing leaner AFR's and more timing. Not to mention more engine life. Drawback is that these designs are not as strong. This does not show up as a drawback until massive cyl pressures and very high hp. These motors are actualy pretty strong. The JDM 2.0 is very strong and can take some serious pressure. The US motor is very strong but it has weak cast pistons. These motors are starting to have a reputation of being stronger and stronger as people learn to tune them correctly rather then trying to tune them as an inline four which they are not.
What works for Mitsubishi isnt what works for Subaru... their too far apart but on the same level of performance and desires i dont wana argue im here to learn about the evo 8 not discrace it.

Gimme a Mivec head & ECU for my engine... no question...
but about the rest; well...
Trust me, I don't think you guys will find the AYC all that great after you try it.
There have been concerns about problems with software implimentation since the introduction of ACD and AYC in the Evo 7. The flakey handling of early E7s was only corrected up to a point. Even the newer Super AYC of JDM and UK spec MR 8s don't solve all the problems IMO. That's the main reason why the 2005 limited-edition STi Spec C (JDM only) beats the Evo in handling now.
Sport Compact Car, Jan '05 - Page 90...
"The other reservation is that the car [Evo 8] might just be too clever. That on the public road, at least, the driver can't impose his will on the car, reducing you to the slowest, stupidest link in the chain. It corners miraculously, but you suspect it could do it without you"...
There are arguments for and against about the flakey handling characteristics of the AYC, for years..

IMO you guys already get the best set-up for AutoX, circuit & street use.
Helical front LSD, ACD (though Subaru is better - more rear torque bias) and rear clutch-type LSD. Actually this is very close to STi Spec C set-up, except that they have better center-diff control.
but about the rest; well...

We (the USA) are not going to get MIVEC. Why, you might ask? Because the regular Evo
4G63 is good enough. All of the import rags love the Evo! The Evo always wins in the comparisons w/ the STI. If the STI would have trounced Evo, it might be a different story.
Mitsu is hurting for $. It takes alot of $ to EPA certify an engine for our market. We're lucky the 05 (04 RS) got the upgraded turbo. Given their current situation, I'm surprised they certified the 6 speed for the US MR. Why would they spend more? Maybe if they knew the 06 STI was going to have a bump in power? The regular 4G63 will fit in the IX just fine. I'll bet that we get the 6 speed and maybe SAYC, for 06. I'll bet that 05 MR was the test mule for getting US emission certification of the 6 speed.
It's a business decision for Mitsu. People will pay over sticker for an IX wether it has MIVEC or not! Why spend money to certify a semi-new motor? I think it depends on what Subaru does with the STI.
I hope the dealers still have some 05 MR's when the 06 comes out. I'm hoping for a deal!
This is just my opinion, flame away...

For real nix - I have felt a before and after diference of VVT on other motors and it will put a huge smile on your face
I'm certainly excited to see it on the 4G63. It will possibly be a collector's item!

Yo' Ron,
I agree that the Evo will continue to evolve. I'm just saying that evolution has it's price. I think that Mitsu will look very carefully at return on investment. It costs a lot to certify cars for the US market.
As a company, they would be better off developing a (gasp) minivan. (For the record, I would like to state that I felt nauseous when I typed the "m" word).

As for the ability to tune the MIVEC in the new Evo - hopefully by then a US company will have figured out how to control the 4G69's MIVEC, and be able to put that knowledge to use on the Evo. So far, though, all that has been done is tweaking the air/fuel curves in order to gain more power the the pre-MIVEC range, so there's a more constant pull.
When you guys get the MIVEC, there won't be any more questioning about if it's better or not. The better torque curve should give you even better launches and 60' times.

It has been widely publicized (in at least 5 magazines that I've seen) that
is putting the V V head on the 4G63 for Evo 9. Yes - final product is still to be seen / anounced, and we're not sure what we'll end up with.... but as you noted before
has taken alot of flak with dropping sales and warranty issues especially in Japan. The only thing they can do to redeem themselves is bring better products, offer incentives, and improve customer service.
Subaru is already ahead of them with their V VT and more flexible center dif - don't you think that
needs to step up to the plate to remain competitive?!
