Magnesium Turbo?

Anybody have any info about the new optional turbo on the IX?

It's supposed to have a magnesium intake housing - I guess that's a compressor cover? Is the impeller a magnesium alloy as well? The exhaust housing size is a 9.8? Is a 10.5 going to be available?

Anybody have any detailed technical descriptions?

Try www.lancerregister.com

Those boys seemed pretty clued up about the IX.

The IX is due for release in Japan on March 18th, so this type of info should be available.........whether it will be offered for the USDM Evo is a totally different matter.

Credit where credit's due.

The www.lancerregister.com post was made in December 2004, almost 2 months prior.

To avoid any confusion it's also worth reiterating that these published specs are JDM and not USDM

The Japanese website has answered part of the question: Magnesium compressor wheel and titanium exhaust wheel.

Size of exhaust housings remains to be seen, as well as other possible changes.

Aluminum burns in air, too, although not quite as hot. Both of the metals oxidize quickly, and the metal oxide coating doesn't burn. I'd guess that since they've managed to keep our aluminum wheels from catching fire, the magnesium should be safe.

magnesium has to be really hot to burn, 310 c=590 f, and aluminum, when added to mercury, oxidises at rates mind blowing, making aluminum oxide. iron oxide= rust. aluminum oxide=a powder thats close to diamonds in strengh numbers. so if your impellor ketches fire, that would be the last thing i would be thinking about, plus it would melt its way out of the engine bay. and if you put mercury paste on someones rims/unpainted evo mr roof, or w/e, it will oxidize the hell out of it. leaving a cool silver dust. but i disclaim anything you do from this. and for a little more info, your cant bring thermometers on planes, only a registered baromoter operator can bring one aboard. sorry for the sceince lesson.

Mercury thermometers

Mercury thermometers are only affected by the Aircraft restriction, same applies to a decompression chamber with diving.
Thats why we use the cheap disposable plastic forehead thermometers in the Medic kits
so the glass won't crack, the glass thermometers are sealed so there is no way of equalizing pressure. Not to mention Mercury is toxic.
anyway sorry for the off topic
