Does the Evo IX have Drive by wire?
I can completely understand why people wouldn't want TBW. I had a 2001 Jetta VR6 with TBW and hated it. Stupid sensitive at small throttle openings. I read in some car mag that they believed that VW had mapped the throttle that way to make the car feel faster.
Personally I think a linear throttle response is a virtue, and a cable is a cheap and reliable way to get there.

I do know that VAG puts the 1.8T into almost every model in its stable. Bottom line here is that it takes tonnes of R&D to make a PnP ECU for any car and at the end of the day, R&D costs gets passed onto the consumer in the form of high prices. Tuner support is available in the form of authorised Motec dealers but the quality of the support you receive is probably very much dependent on the individual dealers.
The Motec website probably hasn't been updated since when they first launched the M800/M880 series. I've had experience with the M400 and M600 and they do have the same Drive By Wire support as the M800, just less injector drivers.
I guess that for the VAG 1.8T right now, standalones are probably more of an 'all-out, the hell with the budget' option but if the market is there...some day it'll happen.

It says on the Motec website:
"MoTeC Drive By Wire is available for certain Bosch, Delphi and Nissan systems using our M800/880 series of Engine Management Systems"
Also, VW pays Bosch lots-o-money to change the Motronic code year to year making base maps impossible. Every time a new ECU code comes out it take the tuners sometimes months to produce a viable chip tune.

The system that VAG employed and employs for their cars isn't very good imho. I've driven an A4 and S4 and you can really tell you are driving a TBW car. You can chip them and whatnot and things are a little better but bottom line is they aren't performance oriented imho.
The systems used on the BMWs, STI, RX8, and 350Z are pretty much undetectable. I can drive my WRX and a STI back to back and honestly I'd rather have the electronic throttle in that car than something cable actuated.
