its got to do with all the mpg issues people complain about. now all the leading companies are abolishing sport lines to shift focus on their eco lines. so dont be surprised if in several years evo's will be but a pleasant memory when real sport cars existed.

 

I get 26mpg in my 400hp evo x. What's bad about that?

 

You must do mostly highway and not many hills?

I seem to be getting rather decent mileage with just a few mods. Running in openloop with a lean idle at 15.1 afr, cruise rpm with higher timing (37*) and 15.3afr. Better ignition to minimize missfire. Tweaked decel fuel cut and leanspool to minimize tip-in tip-out misfire and knock. I raised the decel fuel cut rpm to 3700 rpm so I can shut the injectors off more on the highway. However it's harsher when it cuts at higher rpm so I made it wait longer before cutting and made it much less aggressive to avoid knock. I watch the vacuum gauge and wideband constantly while adjusting the pedal until I get it nice and lean enough for the load. Occasionally I adjust back to 14.7 to refire the cat since I'm watching egts and the 2nd o2 to tell me when the cat is getting too cold. I surround 14.7 afr around my lean cruise cells so I can choose when to be lean.

Basic things like only running half tanks of gas or less since gas stations are on every block . Properly inflated tires, intact underbody skid plates for aero benefits. Wing removed. Windows up. I'm working on some kind of alternator cut but too busy lately.

As of now I'm able to get about 34mpg highway at 75mph, cruising specifically at 45mph in 5th I can achieve sustained 38mpg. I have a very long stretch of straight road I travel daily without stops so it's very easy to stay exactly at 45mph for a half hour or so. By finding the optimal speeds for best mileage I try to always remain in my sweet spots.

Sounds like a lot, but after a few years, this type of driving is rather 2nd nature. I prefer to get up to speed somewhat quickly and then apply light throttle to maintain speed. Medium acceleration at any low speed seems to have horrid mpg despite my initial thinking that light and steady acceleration would increase mileage. It didn't . I noticed that Gravel mode for the ACD provides the least rolling resistance of the 3 modes. With any kind of turning however it falls off fast in Gravel so for non straight roads Tarmac provides better mileage. Probably to do with how it locks up. If I get stuck in any kind of start/stop traffic it's game over! Mileage falls quickly to 16-18mpg so I try my best to avoid traffic.

I tested all MIVEC settings at cruise rpm while watching vacuum to find best cam timing for cruise. Personally I think this is a fantastic car for mileage as long as you keep the drivetrain fluids up and have a strong desire to tinker and a lot of patience.

I still average low 18-24mpg when beating on it here and there like everyone else. Spirited drives as low as 12mpg. So I'm not full of crap thinking I'm getting better mileage than a hybrid but it's money in my pocket for basically free. I drive it like I stole it quite often too

 

Interesting... what's the stock decel fuel cut? I can't remember.

if u ask me its pretty dumb that mitsubishi would just up and dump the evo, it;s what pretty much gvae mitsubishi there big break o well i guess that means our prices on our cars will sky rocket hopfully
