Cost, very expensive, i can see it go between 4000-5000 bucks to get it in all said and done, and I don't think that would be including labor. Difficulty wise, I believe it will be a complete PITA. In the end it's not worth it.

Problem with SAYC retrofit is that you have to keep the stock ECU running things (right?). Because, if I'm not mistaken, it's the stock ECU which controls all the SAYC magic. That means that power mods would all have to be within the confines of the stock ECU...a MAJOR drawback which, in my opinion, would really water down any significant benefits of putting SAYC on the car. Anyone know about the control of this system? Am I right on this that the stock ECU has to run the SAYC? Anyone know if there would be a way to run an independent ECU (such as XEDE or AEM) for the engine management and retain the ECU in a limited capacity to run only the SAYC system?

Ya know why they dont put AYC on USDM cars is cuz of the emission equipment is in its place on the undersde rear of the car, the evap or fuel cleaning black box. Not to mention that i think that Japan likes to keep some of they're more "cool" toys for them selves. Think SPEC-C, STI Type RA. Or maybe they wouldnt be able to keep up with the demand. They just coulndt produce enough, which to me is a good thing. When i drove a Subaru i felt like they were becoming a dime a adozen. They are everywhere here in chicago. The MR is a little more exclusive

that makes no sense not to put it in for emissions reasons, florida has no emissions, not sure about other states but i would think there would be another reason why they didnt put it on ofr the 05s

because it cost money. money to train the us based tech to learn how to service that. also it will cost more money to buy the car if we had all the gadgets the japanese market has.

Most likely the reason also we dont get the high end models like the spec c sti, there isnt a demand for one. $$ and it cheaper to for them to sell the car in japan.

there still is a national limit on emissions for cars to be sold in the US. evap emissions and such. no car can legally be sold here without them.

I don't think emissions is the big issue as far as AYC is concerned. AYC is extremely expensive and hard to maintain. It has 3 fluid resevoirs, 2 of which (diff & resevoir) needs changing every 4500 miles as per the service sheet. Not to mention the fail rate for AYC switches are high, with pump failures not that uncommon. Ask anyone who has a late 90's AYC in his evo or jdm galant vr4 how much of a pain in the *** it is to keep it worry-free and repair!

So, imagine all the drivers and techs in the US that have to deal with AYC, it could be a nightmare. The bottom line is: it's too expensive and hardcore for most US enthusiasts!

I say that because in Jp they have die-hard car fanatics. It's either your lifestyle, or it's not. The average Evo driver there is in his 30s-40s and is a better mechanic than 2 master techs in the US combined whose life goal is to shave .01s off his lap at the local club circuit.

With that said, I predict the Evo X to have quite the maintenaince sheet but the new SAYC should be leagues better than the 1st gen AYC.

I think your idea is great, but I believe that it is a waste of money, and virtually impossible. Let the mighty Mitsu do the R&D and then buy an Evo X for a tiny fraction of the cost. For what it's worth...in the last week I've had two professional Evo drivers take me for 100+ mph racetrack laps in my own Evo IX. I thought I was a fast street driver. It is UNIMAGINABLE what a skilled track driver can do. What can I say...No computerized electronic super duper xyz driving nanny will ever take the place of a skilled driver and huge cajones! I'm all for more capable cars....But NOTHING can ever replace a skilled driver...IMHO

AYC requires more servicing etc. and is expensive to fix if/when something goes wrong.

Most people tend to prefer the models without AYC. The Evo IX GT seems to be far more popular than the GSR (GSR has S-AYC). People also comment on how much better the car feels through corners when fitted with mechanical differentials.
