Exactly were getting all the important stuff and people are complaining about cosmetics you can easily change. Go figure

So.. I decided to give the people at the corporate offices of Mitsu USA a call to see what the #@$# was going on..

After dialing, I was able to reach someone who was actually ON the Evolution Product Planning team for Mitsu USA..

BTW, if it isn't obvious, Mitsubishi USA does READ this forum..

For what it's worth, they explained to me the following explanations for the discrepancies between the US and JDM models.
good job there. at least we know they are paying attention.

#1) Unlike Japan, we have a MR EDITION, and Japan gets the Evolution MR.. BIG difference..
Typical, all forign car makers do this, why are you surprized?

#2) USDM MR Edition: Chrome headlight and taillight bezels - we STILL get these, vs. having to recertify/respec new blacked-out versions for the US..
rejected due to cost reasons.

My reply: Not sure why this would be, after all, we're not talking about recertifying an all-new beam pattern in the lenses or anything.. Just black bezels on the existing US/DOT spec headlamps & taillamps.. that's all we ask..

Guess this costs more to stock 4 new part numbers and a whole new run of black headlamp & taillamp bezels.. have to chalk this up to cost cutting
Cost cutting a side, you would still have to get the new design certified by the FED DOT.

Blame it on the burocrates, not mistubishi. How expensive do you think it is for Mitsubishi to build distinct and unique MR versions? I'll bet it's more expensive than you think, but cheaper than waiting for the FED to get off their fat *** to recertify some head and tail lights.

#3) Same old blue USDM interior on the MR Edition unlike what the MR gets in Japan: Yeah.. you know that, right, but they explained that the JDM seats are smaller.. yeh, shure, but that still doesn't address that they could have just given us the black fabric/alcantara over the USDM seats!!

My opinion: Regardless of the seat spec, Mitsu should have given us the black seating materials over the EXISTING US spec seat.. How much more does THAT cost? Certainly no more than spec'ing up the leather for US which has ALREADY been DONE.. No safety recert necessary for the black MR materials on a US-spec seat, I'd have to say..

If Mitsu can get us leather recaros for us fat Americans, why can't they just substitute the black fabric for the US MR Edition recaros?!? This is insane..

Subaru did the same thing with the STI.

Face it, Americans are fat... Get to the gym and do something about it...(not just you)

#4) As I mentioned above, the Mitsu product team for the Evolution DOES read this message board intensely, so let your voices be heard..

#5) Well, at least we get most of the cool mechanicals:
a) Helical LSD
b) 6-speed
c) Bilsteins
d) Alum. roof

If I was buying an MR that is all I would care about. mmm ok, that cool grey color would be another enticement...

You guys are quite right there, but there is still one thing that is missing and i don't think its a cosmetic stuff only......SAYC!!

Anyway some would say that SAYC won't be missed since it would only bring the problem of high maintenance costs and you could feel it only workin on track driving, maybe they are right.

As someone who started pestering their General Manager since spy shots and press release leaks started appearing on the web, this is dissapointing. However, I already have a plan of action and am already making calls...

My dealer is now researching paint codes and fabric for me. Why? I've asked if he could itemize how much it would cost to:

A) Have the sides of the spoiler panted to the proper color
B) Have the headlamp and taillamp bezels painted to the proper color
C) Swap the radio and gauge cluster (he said they'd do this for free)
D) Have the seats reupholstered with the JDM black fabric
E) Convert to a JDM steering wheel (may not be possible)

I'll have the dollar amount by the end of the week. And depending on what it is, I'm going to ask him to have the car meet A-D (and if possible, E), and be that way the day I pick it up. I'll also then gladly call the Mitsubishi USA Product Planners to let them know I would've GLADLY paid that amount, since I expected a Lancer Evolution MR, not an "MR Edition", from the day I started showing spy photos to the dealership.

Gee, its really too bad the people at Mitsubishi have to waste time answering calls like this instead of actually working on the cars and helping the company recover. I am confident this vehicle will be a success despite all the negativity. When they're all sold out and prices soar, and when it spanks the STi in heads up testing, the last thing people will be talking about is the color of the headlights.

There is always going to be newer, faster, better down the road. It's no different with anything else (computers, TV's, audio/video, etc.) You just have to figure how much more it will cost at that point. There are members on this forum who will black out headlights/tailights for a very reasonable cost. I've had mine done. That is no biggie. The other things will show up eventually. Is Mitsu limiting the US MR to a set Number? (I had heard 500 units)

as a soon-to-be owner of an MR, i am a little disappointed about the cosmetics. however, i agree with you that the car will still be a success, if (and it's a a big "if") it performs as well as it should. otherwise, this release is gonna be one huge ****up.

Sorry if I'm offensive but you guys are basically *****ing about some cosmetic differences. The performance goodies are still coming w/ the MR and that's what is important. If you cared so much about looks and less about performance you shouldn't be buying an Evo in the first place.

People need to realize that their were less 2004 Evo's brought here for sale than in 2003, so guess what sales couldn't be better or even equal, they had to be lower with less available for purchase. Let's look at this from a logical viewpoint and try to understand the numbers instead of just reading them.

awdmofo has it right and I support his reasoning 100%. You guys are whining about cosmetic items. The only performance item we don't get here is the S-AYC, big deal. I applaud Mitsu for bringing the car here considering its current financial situation. Stop whining or move to Japan where you can buy the JDM version.

Thank you Mitsubishi for supporting the U.S. market and don't listen to the haters.
