Tuning a IX with SAFC-I/II
Amazing nobody has asked this question yet. A search yielded null results. With MIVEC, I heard the gains are slim tuning with this if any. What I'm wondering is then how will us IX guys go about tuning our cars? Will we just rely on an ECU flash and that's it? Possibly those new MIVEC cams from HKS with the in-cockpit controls might do the trick. Or possibly can an aftermarket ECU/piggyback do the job? Just a side thought. The SAFC though is my primary concern. Is this unit worth getting for an Evo IX owner who plans to do an ECU flash? I heard it's good for switching fuel timings on the fly with race gas, but I'm looking more into fine tuning the timings after getting the ecu flashed. Will the lack of MIVEC support not be worth even getting this unit?

I wouldn't mess with it, since you can't do affect the MIVEC and have no control over timing. Your best bet is a flash until there are more piggyback and/or standalone options. The SAFC may still allow you to lean out the AFRs on race gas to make some more power, but it's not useful otherwise.

I don't understand why MIVEC would decrease the tuning ability of the afc. If anything the timing should be better not worse since the afc can't adjust timing to begin with. The afc adjusts the fuel by modulating the air flow signal, MIVEC or not, and I think you should see benefits. Of course I have NOT tried this and I'd like to have real world feedback from people who have the afc on an IX. If someone disagrees just please explain it to me.

I've a couple Evo IXs with a AFC and Boost controller and the AFC is great
For flatting out your torque and power dips. With a AFC and Boost controller we were able to extract 30+whp and flatten out the power curve. A flash is generally better
but if you change any parts your tune will be off. With a super afc you can tune your
car while waiting for a flash, and also fine tune your flash if you alter your partsw.

I don't believe this thread is still going... Personally it's nice to use to tune on top of a flash. that is until some peeps can figure out real-time tuning with ecuflash. But still can't beat the interface in terms of ease of use for the SAFC.
