Question Tuning Questions

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I got 3 main questions; two are pretty easy the other I need some insight from the pros on here:

1. I just got a 2006 JDM Evo IX and I know u can set the stationary rev limiter, what is a good value to set it at to ensure no damage is done to the car? Btw, it is my daily driver and I intend to keep this car for very long at minimal cost.

2. Another friend with an Evo IX told me this Mivec map is good and unlocks some power in the car (see below for picture). I plan to load this map onto my car without changing the AFR and timing, will this result in knock? Or is this safe? Also do I load this on all Mivec maps?

3. Can i turn down boost using EcuFlash?

Thanks, and sorry for being a noob!

5500 to 6000 is a good place for the stationary rev limiter.

That MIVEC map is the JDM RS map and many people use it. I couldn't telly you if it would cause knock or not. Try it and see.

Yes, you can turn down boost in ECU Flash assuming you still have the stock boost controller. You can do this by:
a) Reducing the Boost Desired Engine Load values
b) Reducing the Boost Control Load Offset value
c) Reducing the Max Wastegate Duty Cycle value (The error correction table will make up for this change so this doesn't work well by itself ... lower these values in conjunction with the other 2)

u know where i can find a write up on this? i need to lower boost in case someone needs to use my car when i am travelling abroad.

5500? that is not too high? i ws thinking more like 3000 rpm so i can launch the car using this feature?

3000 is way too low to use for launching as the car will easily bog at that RPM if you try for a good launch.

Lowering boost is easy. Just lower the values I said to and see what happens. If you lower the boost desired engine load very low, you'll just end up at the wastegate spring pressure which is 11 psi.

Unfortunatly, There is no "good value that will not damage the car", the key to not damaging the car is to not abuse it. Launching the Evo can be a violent or a smooth process - you want it to be as smooth as possible. That said any type of launching on pavement is going to be abusive. Prepare to Pay to Play if your taking your Evo to the dragstrip.

Things you can do to prevent damage while launching the car.

DONT sidestep or dump the clutch, especially if it's a race clutch. The SHOCK is more likely to break parts than actual torque / whp.

Speaking of clutches, Select a clutch that is appropriate for your power level / mods. My friend broke his tranny and tcase with just 370whp, He dumped, the clutch grabbed and held, the track was sticky, something had to give... He had the Exedy Twin HD which is a great clutch but it is capable of transfering 500+ whp/tq to the wheels unfortunatly his driveline was not

Preload the drive train - Either with the emergency brake to keep from redlighting or you can do an ok job by just letting the clutch out a little before actually launching the car.

Choose a launch RPM that allows for a little tire slipping, hence the raising of the secondary rev limiter (6000rpms is a good starting point)

LIFT off the throttle if you start experiencing wheel hop. Hop will break the front diff quickly.

Tire pressure can make big differences on how the car launches.

Oh sorry to double post, the JDM RS mivec map is an improvement over the USDM mivec map but there are more aggressive mivec maps that are capable of making even more power. As with all tuning, a custom map designed to work with your mods will work best but the JDM mivec map is a decent starting point.

If your using a boost solenoid then you can control it with the ECU. So yes you can turn it up or down but tuning the boost with the ECU can be tedious.

i am kinda new to this tuning thing but i am learning everyday thanks Mr Evo Ix and Touring.

Btw its not a RS its an JDM Evo IX GSR

I answered your other post... you can find that ROM at www.osecuroms.org. Pretty much you can change the mivec map without altering other maps. Logging is always recommended. One thing is that with an aggressive mivec map some cars seems sensitive to knock above 6500rpms, if you have to much mivec advance above 6500 you could see some knock up top. If you do just zero the mivec map in the upper rpm cells but if you can run some mivec advance up there it seems to help the IX make power to redline.

If you're letting that person just use your car and you don't want them to go crazy with it I'd say the easiest way to lower boost is to set your "turbo boost error correction" table to all 0 and set your "max wastegate duty #x" to all 0.

There is more than one "max wastegate duty #x" table. I don't know which the JDM 9 uses, let alone the 9. Setting them all to 0 will be fine though.

Or you can do as TouringBubble says to moderately turn down boost. Actually you can turn it down to the max too. Just whatever is easier to you.
