Check with your local auto schools first they normally have some sort of fuel tuning program/class. I think my local UTI? branch has a class you can take that shows you how to use the software and how a basic fuel map works. Learn to use a flow bench or just basic head work (port/polish etc). This along with the basic knowledge of how to break down and rebuild a car.

There was a couple local guys around my way when we were young that just went to the local school (Automotive Traing Center) after high school became certified mechanics and just started working on their own cars at night while working at dealerships etc.. during the day after a while they just pulled money together and rented a garage and started making money bolting on other peoples products. After doing it long enough they found flaws in the products and redesigned them and then started selling their own stuff. You would be amazed at how far a reputation can make or break you in the aftermarket game.

I am no pro by any means but heres my suggestions
EFI offers a few different courses around the country. Read alot. Read alot and did i mention read alot. Best thing imo is experience. Read get a good understanding of everything. Then start taking baby steps with your vehicle Like what your changing, why your changing. Understanding what will happen when you make the changes, Analyzing and understand the data then repeat, repeat and repeat
