i think the evo burnt somthing like 7 coils, and this seems to of fixed it, the problem seems to be not all the coils are the same, i have been working on different evos for a few years now, and i have always noteced differences with the evo coils, i do not know if it was from new stock to ols stock or revisions were made, i am at a loss to it, but one coil that is there will trigger with as little as .2 of a volt but we have other coils that will only trigger at .8 of a volt.

Some of the older emanages did not let the ignition out put sink right to 0v and this made the coil stay in the always on state and just over heeted, the evo coils are not the strongest coil in the work!! so it dos not take much to kill it...

The fix makes sense, and I think everyone agrees the problem comes from the emanage not dropping the output voltage to zero. I just don't understand how some cars can burn 7(!) coils and others burn none. Are you putting a diode on each coil output from the emanage?

this problem crops up with some management systems on mazdas with igniter on coil packs... may be the same thing as what you guys are dealing with... and I just saw something in one of the posts above that matches exactly...

If someone has money to burn... leave their ignition key in the on position for a good 20-30 minutes without the car running.. you'll see the coil heat up like all hell and then bubble and fry basically... the igniter gets overcharged, overheats, and slowly melts apart... causes the same kidn of symptoms as what you have...

The easy way to check for this problem safely is if you have the car nice and cool turn on the ignition and don't start the car. then touch the coils periodically. if they start to heat up.. that's your problem (nothing to do with AC or the like)... if they don't heat up during that period then it is not that issue and I'm of no help! Check for a minimum of 5 minutes... a maximum of 10-15... but they will get hot well before they fry... so... you'll know in time to be safe.

but the moral of the story in this case if it is as I said above is that you can get around it by purely making sure you never let the car sit in the acc or on state without it running.

Left my key on/engine off for 45 minutes (accidentally) - no burnt coils, though some have had the exact result you mention.

Sorry to ask this question here but, my brother-in-law just bought an e-Manage for his turbocharged OZ Lancer. I am just looking over the instructions and the write up mentioned earlier. Does anyone know if the instrutions will be accurate for an OZ?

By the way, when did Greddy make the updates? He just bought his and I was wondering if they would have updated their firmware and harnesses.

I would be surprised if the Evo ECU pinouts were the same for the Lancer, shocked really. All the 'supported' engines are listed in the manual. If the Lancer engine isn't there, you're going to have to get some info from guys that have been there already, or figure it out yourself. It's pretty simple once you get the pinouts for the ECU. The harder part will be figuring out the Rotary Switch settings on the emanage. Do a search on the emanage Yahoo group to see if someone has already published the settings.

Call Greddy I tried that before and all they basically said was the answers were in the manual, except in that case the manual was JAPANESE

Anyway, after doing some research and comparing my Evo's wiring schematic to that of my brother-in-law's OZ Lancer, I was surprised to find that the wires that are needed for the install are identical Weird, huh. I guess thats how they keep costs down, which we all know desperately needs to keep costs down now. Obviously, not all the wires are the same but, the main wires you need to hook up the e-manage and the addtional harnesses are the same

fstgvr4 ----- you are right the wires are the same, i found this out a little wial back, i was singing preases as i thought i was going to have to trace a buch of wires to figure out what was going on..

it is also hard to say what firmware version you have, you should just update it any way to be 100% sure....

if your coils are burning why not give msd an call. they might have somthing better and cheaper replacement. I know they have high performance replacement for eclipse 4g63 motors.
I plan to upgrade mine shortly with those. I might have to relocate the new coils and find longer plug wires to make it work. I have msd Ignition setup before. It makes a diffence. I plan to use msd ingnition system in my evo.
