Software question...problems with laptop connection. techies please :)

So i followed the instructions, and im using my dads laptop. everything is hooked up fine but whenever im trying to have hyperterminal connect to the laptop it tells me that a telemetry device is being used and it wont connect. it says i must close it. Does anyone else have this problem or can you suggest any ideas? What programs could be doing this. its a new dell 3.2ghz laptop with xp on it. I cant figure it out for the life of me and its driving me NUTS!. thanks.

Telemetry or telephony? Is it possible you set it to dial in with the modem as opposed to using the serial port?

^^ like he says, most modern laptops have modem built-in and a serial port that's sometimes disabled. You have to find the right COM port.
One of the easier methods, if it's enabled is to look up device manager in Windows.
In XP you can right click on "My Computer" -> Manage -> Device Manager
Find Ports (COM & LPT) and check out what it says for Communication Port (COM1 etc).

Yeah, sounds like the new "connection" you created is trying to attach to the modem (Telephony, you probably were connected to the internet at the time ), you have to look for a port that doesn't have the modem on it.. look for something like Com1 Com2, Com3 or something like that.. There are some computers that may have the port disabled which could also be the problem, and it might require being enabled.

If your not familiar with PC's you might want to ask one of your "Techie" friends to look at the UTEC instructions and take a look at your laptop and connect it for you the first time.. Trust me, it gets easier as you begin to understand things.

I think he meant to share the map..

I'll probably share my timing map when I finally refine it a bit.. I modeled it after my car's stock map but tweaked in several places to keep it from stumbling or getting any knock at high RPM.

Odds are the map is only useful for your specific vehicle.. especially if it was dyno tuned.. but it would be nice to see what timing their using... But if you paid $200 for it.. Don't give it away, its possible that you may be breaching some agreement with the tuner for their tuning effort (Nondisclosure, etc..)

Besides, I give away all my stuff.. I generally think its for the greater good, so I release my software and modification ideas for all to see.. But for me its just trade secrets that others might otherwise keep to themselves and charge money for..
