Last I heard, the reason you need to gaskets on the pipe is because the turbo kit was originally built for a mirage(?), which had an engine almost identical to ours, but it sat slightly a little taller. So when you put that kit on our cars, there is a little gap between the manifold and the downpipe, which some people have accounted for by doubling up gaskets, I know another guy who just took it into a shop and had the pipe welded a little longer.

Turbo Kit

If that kit was originally for the Mirage, then the engine height is the problem. Aside from the different engine tags (4G93 Mirage and 4G94 Lancer), the motor mounted a little lower in the Mirage, but the engines have the same deck height. A 4G94 is an over-bored version 4G93.... I believe other than that the dimensions of the engine are the same.
