Go or no go with turBO?
Go or no go with turBO?
Once again im attempting to gain information based off of personal expieriences, opinions, and overall any information you may have concerning your RRM turbo.
The gist of this thread:
I want a faster car, ive tried think of all different ways of going about this, ive thought of trading my lancer in and getting an evo, SRT4, even a fully decked out mini cooper. But that wouldnt work cuz i like where my payments are at on my lancer (200 a month) and plus itll payed off by this comming december, and it would be nice not to have a car payment. SO, ive highly highly highly considured going forced induction like many people on this thread have, and of course in doing so i would have to go RRM because i honestly just dont trust the other companies, i think they just look to shaddy.
However, off and on ive seen people either saying that their turbo'd lancer is kicking *** and beating even lightly modded evos with a stage 2 which i do believe (*cough* example *cough*) , or still is slow as hell and will never be fast because of what it is or whatever.
fact is we've all seen people either say one or the other, so any reasoning behind whatever side you take would be greatly appriciated. however the last thing i want are people being f***ing stupid and arguing about who's right/wrong. so please do everyone and i a favor and desist from that
thanks, matt

if you go stage 1 youre gonna want more power. i got the turbo with the thought in mind that i only wanted some more power to get around. then i wanted more and more.
think of it this way, even if you got a diff car, would you really mod it to beat evos for daily driving?
the noise isnt significantly louder (which i like) just get a catback and a header with the turboand ur good to go

I'll give you the low down on my experience. I have never owned a fast car. My roommates line up included Spec-V, S4, and Mazdaspeed Protege. So I was looking to get some speed so I could compete. I went with the piggyback, and had problems with it from day 1 and eventually returned it to RRM. I've also learned the simple bolt-on route does basically nothing for the money. So, I got myself a nice 0% interest credit card with a $5000 limit, and started looking for a turbo.
I bought Vince's auto tranny stage 1 kit, which I didn't mind since I wanted to move the battery to the trunk any ways. Install was easy. The power is great and I am now the second fastest car in the house. Although my roommate just traded his S4 in for a Mazda6, so now I am the fastest in the house. Stage 1 is just fine for me. My next step is to buy another engine, build it up, put it in, then upgrade to Stage 2 (doing it my way though, with my own injectors and eManage). I'm not really into racing other people, because I don't really have anything to prove. I beat a 2nd gen Prelude the other day, but big deal, I knew I was going to any ways.
The money spent on the turbo upgrade will be better for you in the end then getting a different car. I mean you have already absorbed the depreciation of your current Lancer, why do it all over again with a new car? I didn't and I'm happy with my decision.

It is true that our lancers just don't seem to be capable of making monstrous amounts of power like evos, sti's, etc. But with a good turbo setup and supporting mods, our cars can make more than enough power to be dominant street cars. My neighbor has a slightly modified (exhaust, intake, some other stuff) 2001 trans am, which is conisidered to be a fast "muscle car". Stock they run well over 200 horses, and he had his dynoed at a little over 300. We took a run around the block the other day to see how we compared and he was actually kinda pissed that my 4 cylinder lancer could keep up with and pull away from his car! Weight was his main problem. My car is a lot less for the engine to have to push than it is for his car, and that's where I made up for having less power. Plus if you have a decent suspension, handling comes into play as well. His handling wasn't as good as mine so he would have to slow down more on turns. But after it all, he had respect for me and my car. Now there are some fast cars on the road, but this is just one example of a lancer outperforming a car that has become a legend for being fast. Now I know trans ams aren't what they used to be, but my point is still valid. In my opinion, unless you want to get into serious drag racing, our lancers have the potential to provide you with more than enough power and performance for the street.

And go turbo, just feeling the difference
between your car now, and your car once
it's turbocharged is worth it. My friend
has a 2.0 jetta trek(which I plan on killing
after I get my turbo). I've ridden in it before
he turbocharged it, and after, and the difference
was tremendous. Thing is, he is using a used
T-3 which seems like it would be too big of a
turbo for a 2.0. Anyways, the point is, the lancer
is not only a nice and comfortable car stock(the
perfect family sedan), but other people know it
is, making it the perfect sleeper.

there are several things taht you could be meaning when talking about "fast". you could be talking about overall quarter mile time, lowend acceleration and traction to get it, top end acceleration, top speed, etc. Our car will never get adequate traction when turboed so our 1/4 time and low end will always suffer. When ppl talk about beating evos, its from a roll and probably a high roll. To me that means a lot less than from a dig, but it is still something, worth 6500 tho? I dont think so. The car wont be a beast by any stretch and would still get beat by most cars on teh top end even if they are turboed as well. Beating the evo on the highway really isnt much of an accomplishment when it is awd and its strength is off the line and its top end gets robbed by the awd and then just put a little bit of money in the evo and then you no longer could beat it.

Does that go for Lancers with front LSD as well?
yeah well my suspension is great, i mean you name it i got it, so handling is as good as its gonna get, and when i mension the beating of an evo, i could care less about beating an evo, but being as fast as one? man that sounds nice, but so far i like the responces im gettting, thanks guys
