Boostin in T-minus 3 weeks

Hey Guys,

So like I said a while back i was shooting for the completion of aquiring parts for my turbo kit at the end of may and the install in the beginning to Mid of June, and as of this weekend the Parts are all finally here! I am shooting for June 9th as the start date of installing the turbo. I'm hoping to spend Friday - saturday working like all day and night to get it fired up sunday mid morning and work out any last minute problems. Heres my list of parts and costs. I figured you guys could let me know now what i'm missing and give me any tips that would help during the install...

T25 Turbo
TSI Manifold
Oil Return and Feed Lines
Coolant Return and Feed lines
Intake pipe
----------------
$600 used for less than 1k miles, perfect condition

Evo Stock Intercooler pipes with minor modifications - $75
Stock Evo BOV - $25
Custom Downpipe - $150 max (driving the car to my local place after the turbo is installed and getting the downpipe fabbed up)
Magnaflow Catback - $395
Autometer A/F gauge - $60
Megan Racing Tinted Boost Gauge - $40
A Pillar triple pod - $40
Megan Racing EGT Gauge with probe - $95
18x6.5x3 intercooler - $140 - Pressure tested to .5 psi drop (not bad )
12:1 FMU - $80
Walbro 2g eclipse 255lph FP - $99

Fittings for feed and return lines - $25 from local Home Depot

Various other things like oil, coolant, vaccum lines, misc hose couplers - $75

All in all if i dont have any other major expenses this custom kit cost me under 2k

I'm VTA with the BOV and running the MAF just before the TB. I hear this has no problems with the boost i will be running (7-8psi max). If it does create problems its no big deal though. I will just recirc it and move the MAF, its at least worth a try.

Anybody out there with similar setups? The Evo stock intercooler plumbing was clutch. That made fabbing up the piping sooo much easier. For the most part its a direct fit with the exception of a few minor added pieces.

This weekend i'm dropping in the FMU, the Walbro, and i'm Mounting the intercooler. Then like i said, June 9th the turbo and manifold gets bolted up, Oil Pan gets tapped, Oil and Water lines go in, and everything gets bolted up. I'm going to start her up, drive her down the block and check for leaks with an open turbo outlet no down pipe. As long as it runs and doesnt leak i'm then taking it to my local shop to have the downpipe fabbed up and i should be good to go Fingers crossed, its been a long time researching and tracking down parts.

I've been spending the last i would say 3 or 4 months every day at work reading old posts, printing instructions, pictures, and poking around every inch of my engine bay and i feel i've got a pretty good grasp of whats going into this. I'm pretty mechanically inclined so i'm confident i can tackle the install and any ensuing problems. I commute to work in manhattan via the train everyday which is right around the corner so having my car down for a week if need be isn't a big deal. If i'm gonna do it i'm gonna do it right

I've got my trusty Metrocard and LIRR monthly pass.

Thanks for the well wishing guys, i'm going to photograph the entire install.
If you guys are up for it, Tuesday nights during the summer out here on LI is the Bald Hill car show hosted by the local Fire departments. Its not bad, like 5 to 10 bucks to put your car in and its a good time. Muscle cars during the early evening and then just before night all the imports take up the back half of the show, we could get all the lancers together for one show. Would be a good time

Muahahaha! Actually someone else outbid me on ebay, but turned out the person who won the auction was way over their head with turboing their lancer so i cut a deal with the seller and took it off his hands Just meant less searching for parts for me hehe

You might want an adjustable fuel pressure regulator. I am thinking that 255 + 12:1 is going off the deep end for richness.

You forgot a wastegate, unless the T25 has an internal wastegate.

Other than that, looks like you got everything. I agree about the 255 + 12:1, you will run rich, unless you get a tune, then you should be fine. However, I've learned (and I no know others already have, some the very very hard way... ) that the Vortech 12:1 is garbage. One Lancer on here stage 2 blew up his engine cause his Vortech was leaking fuel and he lost fuel pressure, went too lean and Kaboom. I'd look into an adjustable FPR or the like.

Good luck with the install!

Yeah, i've been back and forth between FMU, no FMU, i don't have a vortech, i have one that came with the TSI kit. Did i write vortech up top? If i did disregard it haha. Its only temporary though. I'm only going to be boosting 5psi (wastegate is set at 6psi so figure in a 1psi drop) so an FMU will be plenty to keep me rich until i get all the bugs worked out. Then i'm putting in either an Emanage or the RRM piggy back and a wideband to lean out the fuel curves a little bit. Once thats all good and running reliably for a little bit i'm going to upgrade injectors, up the boost to 8 or 9psi and get a professional tune with a dual boost controller (5psi for Daily drive, 8 or 9 for fun). I'm takin it step by step, making sure i don't get too ambitious too quick.

That is a very good idea. I went turbo and then I've started going overbaord! Instead of sitting back and really enjoying the long awaited and anticipated joy of boosting, I instantly started wanting to do more. I'm in the process of going stage 2 on my current setup and at the same time I'm redesigning my kit. I've already bought another turbo and I'm beginning to piece together a custom kit. I'll eventually take off this kit and sell it and then install the full custom kit. The modding bug never goes away!!!

Oh i totally hear you! My plans are a little more grounded lately. I'm boosting in 3 weeks, with a goal of stage 2 around end of summer (8to 9psi with upgraded injectors and tune). Then thats it for turbo. After that i'm just detailing the car, making sure it looks pretty, maybe throwing in a set of seats. And then just enjoying it for a while. I plan to move down to florida in about a year so i will be selling my lancer about that time and starting from scratch with an evo. I've always wanted an evo, i was just a poor college student for a while. Now i'm in the working world and i can afford things

PS - The turbo is internally gated at 6psi
