Turbo!
Because today I have some time to kill I'll tell the story of how I came to have my turbo. It's worth the read, but a long story.
It all began a few months back when I received a PM from a guy here on the boards, Nem187. He explained to me that he was from Northern Virginia, where I am from, but was currently in Iraq. He had a bunch of questions about turbos and general car stuff. Over the coarse of a few months he began to peice together a kit, so upon his return he would have a kit to put onto his Lancer. When he got back stateside he soon found out that he was being redeployed to the sandbox and decided that he would like to sell the kit.
Now, I'm poor. Going to school, renting, girlfriend, car payments, insurance etc... leaves very little in the way for money to play with. So when asked me if I'd like to buy the kit I told him the truth, I only had about a grand I could come up with under such short notice. In fact I was going to borrow the money to even be able to do that. So he went about the non-envious task of trying to sell the kit here on Evom for I believe 1500 obo...
Weeks went by and I would from time to time bump his sell page; always wishing I had enough to buy the kit off of him, but knowing that I'd never have that kind of money. And then one day I get a voice messege. It's Nem... "hey man, you want to buy that kit off of me for a grand... give me a call back?" Upon listening to the messege I start calling friends and my girlfriend asking to borrow what I can... they all know I'm good for it. I get my best friend to loan me the cash and we plan to go get the turbo in th next couple days.
Well, I try calling Nem again. No answer. Text messege. Nothing. I'm pissed. I've let a golden oppurtunity slip out of my hands... perhaps a turbo was never meant to be. Weeks go by, me cursing Nem187 every day upon my waking... and everynight I say a prayer that he has done unto him what he has done unto me...
I was so pissed that I didn't want anything for my birthday, which was comming up. I told my friends and my girlfriend that I just wanted to have pizza and be done with it.
As I came home from work on my birthday I open the door to find my friends, who had decorated my apartment with streemers and banners all screaming, "Happy..." and I shut the door and started to walk away. The thought of being "happy" for anything still sounded sour to me. I was coaxed back in under the promise of no cake and that no one would try to cheer me up.
Well, after going to my room to change out of my worrk attire I walk outside. I am told to sit down at the kitchen table and to read my cards. My girlfriend scolding me to be a sport and just to be accomidating for the people who had gotten me something reminding me that birthday parties are for others as well as the birthday boy... So I play nice... I read a card from a friend... how nice, I give her a hug and say thanks... I sit back down and start reading my girlfriends card.
"I know you didn't get what you really wanted this year so I thought I'd get you something to get you started..." Then she hands me a long poorly wrapped gift. I open it up and inside is a used gauge pod piller with a autometer EGT and boost gauge. I'm blown away, but I say to her, "thanks baby, but I'm not sure it will fit my car, these A-pillers are specific to each car." She then tells me she tried and understands if I am upset. Then she tells me to sit on the couch. So I do as I'm told... totally not in control at this moment, totally a pawn, left to whims of my party coordinater/girlfriend.
I take a seat and am handed a larger box. This suker has to weigh at least twenty pounds. On my lap this thing rests, my friends all egar eyed egging me to ripp off the wraping. So do as I am prompted and start to peel away the wrapping. I open the box, which I notice says Injen... I see a polished pipe... I think CAI? "Damn this thing weighs a ton!" I say under my breath... "Purple, Greddy blow off valve?" I think... "What? You guys didn't?" It's all there, turbo, hacked off lines, beat up FMIC... And it looks like Chirstmas when you are five and you don't know that Santa is just your dad in his underpants and robe the night before wrapping the gifts and eating your cookies and milk.
My girlfriend had contacted Nem the night after I had spoken to him, came up with the money and planned it all out. The worse part is for a month I was cursing Nem... and now I will have to name my first born after him.
I just I'd jot all of that down. Right now the turbo is sitting on my kitchen table, best center peice ever. I should be installing the kit in the next month or so after I get the up pipes back from jet-hot... I can't wait.

funny how that happens!! i actually put that on my christmas list!!
Yeah I know, but I don't have any friends in the area with access to a garage and the tools needed. Unfortunatly I did have one friend but he went off to college. Damn higher education.
So I'm in a strange situation with a turbo with all the parts sitting on my dining room table looking at me everyday. I have had this sitting there since June 30... it's starting to get depressing...
Anyone in Northern VA that can help a Lancer guy out?

you need basic tools to do the kit...if kungfugirl has sent you the intructions for the RRM kit, try and tackle it yourself! It's really not that hard. Just takes time.
The hardesst part is the oil tapping IMO ( i was going to pay someone to do it, but instead i did it myself cause they were too busy, so far so good, no leaks!) and taking the bolts off the downpipe and CAT as well as the O2 sensor before the cat. I did the install myself a couple weeks ago, in the cold (it's almost winter, there is frost!), the rain, in a driveway with no garage or anything covering me or the car and the car was on ramps. All i used was a basic set of handtools...
It's really simple...i can't beleive you've had it this long and havent installed it yet! I went nuts having the kit for a week before putting it on! haha

I would get the spark plugs and some Mobil 1 Full synthetic oil. No reason to go to a lesser quality oil. There is this HUGE myth that synthetic oil will blow up our cars when in fact it just is a far superior oil. Better lubrication, better heat transfer, more detergant etc. Look at the cars that use synthetic. From people's DD's, to 300-400HP street cars all the way to race cars. Synthetic is the only oil the powerful cars will run.
Let me try and assist you.
Install your fmu yourself, that is easy and it can be driven with no turbo.
Really i suggest you do this.
Take your car to a shop, and tell them you need your oil pan tapped and the pan removed and reinstalled once it is tapped.
Make sure they test for leaks.
Then just have the car towed home and in the meantime, have ur header off at your house and have the assembly completely together.
this way all you have to do is run the oil feed line and attach the return line to the fitting you had tapped in.
Then its all down hill, just install the piping and fuel pump, along with the new plugs.
Really i wish i lived near you i have learned alot from raping my car.

Only problem is that I live in an apartment... no way I'm doing the install there. Too many sketchy people over looking, not a good thing. The other difficulty is that I use my car for school and work. I can't be without it. If I ran into any issues I'd be SOL.
Yeah, I've had it for awhile, but money has been an issue. Going to school paying rent, living, etc. takes money. But I do get a Christmas bonus and a raise come Feb. So, I just might hold off and take the plunge and if things go south I'll have a bit of a buffer then. We'll see. It's not that I'm afraid to wrench on my car, I've done almost every single one of my mods myself. It's just the prospect of going boom this time around that has me second guessing.
