It does not lock it by any means and is nothing like a welded diff ( I have 240 friends who weld their rear end, horrible way to gain traction unless your a strictly drag car). It works the same way as a traditional clutch type LSD, the difference being instead of several clutch discs being compressed to introduce friction for better traction this produced the same result using 2 solid blocks of hardened metal pushing on the splined driveline gears instead. The result is about 90-95% as efficient as any quaife or Kaaz but at about 1/3-1/4 the price. It is not AS good as them ( I would not expect it to be considering the price difference) but your paying an awful lot more for that extra 5-10%. I did considerable research on this before I dove into it so I am not worried about any metal shavings or anything regarding the operation of this unit. Daily driving you don't even know it is in there until you start getting on the gas. Considering the level of power my car is pushing and the abuse I just put this through yesterday I can say with great enthusiasm its well worth the money and yes I do consider it a poor mans lsd and a damn good one at that. Just went out today in the pouring down rain and I can almost pull all the way through 2nd without spinning (when I do spin its both wheels) before this I could drop my car to 3rd doing 60 and I would break loose and hit the rev limiter lol .

Happy to answer any more questions about this. I was very skeptical when I came across this option when I got serious about finding an lsd option so I read every thread, reviews and anything I could find on it and sifted through to find the BS and the legit info

Thank you for the reply and taking the plunge with this for people like me. Like you said, the price point made me a little skeptical about this. And you are an auto crosser so I know that if you're happy with it it must be fairly effective, that's a pretty good endorsement. Does it recommend any different weight/type of gear oil or just the stock fluid? Have you come across any other users and what the lifespan of this type of unit is?

That's another bonus. Unlike clutch type lsd that needs special fluid to keep the disc's conditioned. This does not, I did go with synthetic this time but stock weight. I have read a couple horror stories about people shredding their spider gears from these. HOWEVER not a single story gave detailed information on their story, everything was pretty vague which as far as I am concerned knocks them down some in their credibility. I read plenty of threads with people using them for years with no issues at all and still going, and all the detailed threads I read on this gave high ratings on their effectiveness, durability, and reliability. Anyone I found that seemed legit (mainly meaning I found various thread they posted on unrelated to this and found them to be genuinely knowledgeable on anything they replied to) either had first hand experience with it and praised it highly or they admitted (like yourself) that although it seems sketchy they could not approve or negate any claims since of course they had no personal experience with this.

You can buy them a lot of places but yeah I suggest Ryan from TRF, if for no other reason then the fact that he not only sells them but has first hand experience installing one of these in the Lancer transmission.

This is their site
http://thompsonracingfabrication.com/

I think you will find this little slideshow a good testament to their intimate knowledge of the lancer lol

Unfortunately I cant give you a 100% yes but the fsm shows identical parts in an exploded view of the auto trans diff. I cant imagine a different differential for the auto
