Basically, such change was made to improve vehicle balance. The older 4G63T in the EVO I-III is located in front of the frist axle; thus puting more weight on the nose. Therefore, the vehicle has more understeer characteristic compares to the latter generations.

Since Mitsu was developing a completely new chassis, so they can afford to completely revamp the whole car in every detail. Therefore, they "turned" the engine 180 degree (and now intake side becomes exhaust side) and place it behind the front axle to achieve better F/R weight distribution ratio. However, I dont' have that number handy now

Yeah but I live on the other side of the country and if I keep it fwd I can do it myself...they key was being to do it myself. I could do the awd conversion if I found the rear floorpan and someone that I trust to weld it. I don't trust my welding on a key piece like that. But everything else I could do.

Is there any good rally shop/welder in your area? How far away are you from Ralli-spec, or how about Verment motorsport??? I rule out TAD since it's in Chicago... You can have someone do the rear part for you while you keep the stock engine and front axle intact. And then drive the car back to your place and start working on the swap

Ralli-spec is 6hrs away. I really want to have a project I can do myself, with minimal help. I have a friend who is a honda, nissan, and dsm expert. I'll see what his take on it is tonight. I know I could do the honda or nissan swap within a week (pretty much plug and play) I was looking for a nice used 4g mirage locally....makes looking for a straight 240sx look easy. With the honda or nissan, I won't be alone, there are tons in my area (around 20). But I know of no mirage conversions in my area (a great plus ) I could put an evo kit on it and everyone would think just that..a mirage with a kit...until I beat them So if I stay fwd on the mirage, all 3 project cars would be pretty easy to do and cost about the same, and they all would be about the same speed. Maybe I should close my eyes and just pick one

I can't handle a project like that since I'm not experience enough. I can talk spec, theory all day, but working on one will require my friend's help.

I would say for the EG, it's all been played out and that's no secret anymore (I even did half of the swap with my friend, he just tell me to remove this, tighten that... and I'm like...OK)

the Silvia coversion is good since it's RWD and the SR20DET is a good platform to start with.

Mirage, it will be VERY UNIQUE, but you'll be a pioneer trailblazer in this. There are several of them out there, you might wanna consult with those guys.

Yeah, I know. Most people rather just toss out the Q before reading a bit, and the Mods on our board are kinda fed up (can get a dozen of the same Q on 4g63T swap within a month or 2 span).

Also, I'm glad this board has info on such swap potential. Just link it up, much easier.

Besides, I do believe the Lancer's engine bay is a tad bigger than the mirage counterpart. Bigger TC'er maybe possible.

As for the swap, you can cheat 2 ways.
1) Make your car a pro class dragster (not street legal) by chopping the whole front engine bay off and weld a new one (doing that, you can shave 1-2 sec off immediately) to accomodate the US spec 4g63T or hybrid (3 in the US that I know - many more to come).

2) Next, about the AWD, you can forsake it (extra dragline loss, adds weight, and only benefits during launch in 1st gear or auto-X). Solution: you may want to use axles from the GS-T and mate it w/ traction control using its ABS sensors. I know many people don't like traction control, but IMO it's better than AWD on the track (less possibility of tranny damage - ask how many 3000GT VR4 drivers go dragracing - not many). I have seen how the C5 vette is tamed by it (no uncontrollable oversteer - remember the C4 was a monster to drive which the mantle goes to the Viper now). It's cost-effective and less labor intensive . . . just need elecetronic know-how using the service manual on the ecu pinout.

BTW: if the the vette and Audi have traction control, it can't be that bad. Also, I do believe Porsche has a form of it in its AWD . . . not sure since I've never had the fortune to talk to their mechanic or driver.

It's more common for the 3g dodge colt/eagle summit HB w/ a 4g61T to swap out to a 4g63T. For the 4g, it's a rare occurance. I'm willing to say it's a dime or dozen in the US. For the 5g (ie also the 6g Lancer), Sean Glazer has done it on the 5g, but it suffered a great deal of TQ steer on the track. He probably lost at most 1.5 sec just trying to steering it straight down the track (chassis not strong enough). For the 6g, I believed Mitsu has a great job on chassis stiffness. A couple weaks ago, a lancer friend got his car totalled, and he was able to walk out w/ just an elbow scratch (being T-bone approx -40 mph).
