Exclamation Recomendations on In-Dash Head Unit?

Ok, for christmas my mom is getting me an In-Dash Head Unit for my RA, thing is this is new to me, i dont know which one is good and and which ones i should avoid. Today she showed me one by PYLE (i never heard of them) but the review on it was pretty bad, so im glad she show me, . Anyways, can you guys recomend some good ones? Price is sort of a factor, less than $500 and im not really a brand name guy, i just like options. My main reason of it are for, DVD, TV and my Music and maybe to play PS2, but thats a far out maybe. If you have a in-dash head unit, can you show me pics? Thanks for the help.

I have the Pioneer AVIC-N1 which is a 6.5 inch in dash dvd player with navigation built in. It also is touch screen. They retail for around $2000 but you can get them on ebay like i did for around $1350 bucks brand new.

I have a pic of my Clarion VRX935VD in my registry. It's touchscreen like the Pioneer but doesn't have navi built in (you can buy a seperate brain to wire it up).

Things to look for would be that the h/u also serves as an in-dash receiver (some are only a screen and require you to have a seperate dvd player), number of rca outputs (3 will let you control front, rear, and sub), and the number and type of inputs (you'll need a video if you want to wire in a ps2).

I'd wait for the stereo gurus to catch wind of this thread and they'll be able to help out further. Good luck!

i think at 500 dollar price range you are severly limited to only a few in dash screens (moist of which either wont have DVD or CD, or they are not motorized). if that is your budget, and if you can't find someone selling a good unit as used for cheap, then don't even consider one. your money will be better spent on a high end cd player. if you plan out what you want to do with the system you can certainly get a better end product then if you just buy what you want because it is cool, without realizing it is a complete piece of garbage. just like everyone has already said, expect to pay over a grand for a decent in dash motorized DVD player. remember that some of those units use brains, that are external from the actual DIN, and there will be a sizeable loom of wires running between the two. that is how they get so much functionality out of such a small area.

and just for reference, i remember a guy with an audi TT that brought in a pyle lcd screen (single DIN) he wanted installed. for starters, the TT has those silly bubble vents which would have stopped the screen from flipping up all the way, but also, the screen was NOT motorized. you had to physically pull out the screen and flip it up.
