Question What do I need to install a double-DIN In-Dash NAV/etc Unit? (on a '09 RA)

Hello,

Just purchased a new '09 Ralliart in Montreal, QC, without the $5,000 premium package (Mitsubishi Canada only offers one 4-Dr Ralliart trim and one "Premium" take-it-all-or-leave-it option package). Got it yesterday! (will post pics after windows are tinted and mud flaps installed)

Got a few questions about what in-dash GPS/CD/DVD/iPhone I should choose, and how to install... Two questions basically:

1. What double-DIN in-dash head unit would you recommend that does all the following:

- GPS Nav (traffic info not necessary) with US/Canada coverage and customizable POI's
- can read CD/DVD/DivX/MP3/etc. (standard commercial DVD's too)
- access iPhone video and music
- hands-free operation of the iPhone
- (ideally) can use the three hands-free phone buttons located on the '09 RA steering wheel
- (ideally) with A/V outputs so I can install another screen for passengers in the back

2. What do I need to install a double-DIN headunit in a '09 Ralliart? From this thread I think I need a double-DIN bezel and HVAC relocation unit, but I'm not sure that info (parts number etc.) applies to a '09 Ralliart..?

I asked those questions to the Mitsubishi dealer but they were less than helpful... The guy knew even less than me (which is astonishing) (!!)

Yeah, you would need a bevel kit. I'm looking into doing the same thing but have been hesitant. From what i gather maintaining control of the steering wheel controls is easy, just an adapter. However, the bluetooth is lost in transition. You would have to get a unit with blue tooth built in and from what i understand it's never the same.

As for a head unit i would recommend Pioneer, just go to crutchfield search double dins, take that model number of the one you like and search it online, usually sonicelectronix.com has solid products at a really low price.

As for getting the exact bevel kit, see if you have a local sound shop or something of the sort, they will be a lot more helpful than the mitsu dealer.

Hope some of that helps.

Unfortunately not so astonishing. These guys get paid to sell, and they don't need to know much with alot of the dopes buying these days. One dealer i went to tried telling me the difference between the RA and X was just that the RA was a 4 cyl and the x was a V6, and some other "minor bits".

The options for the bezel are : Mitsu kit- very expensive but looks the best (~$700 CDN)
Metra kit- very cheap and it looks like it to (~$40 US)
Crutchfield sells one but I think it may just be the Metra one

There is a post on the forum about installing a factory GPS unit, the guy put the Metra one in first and later changed to the factory kit, you may want to look at it as there are pics.

As for the DVD/NAV units, how much do you want to spend? For a grand you can get what you want, but the best units are approaching $2k CDN. When you decide on the price point you can narrow it down and just check out the online reviews. I think the Pioneer and Kenwood units are the best.

thks for the feedback!

I'm interested in units like the Alpine IVA-W505 - about $1-1.5K range.

Before I make a choice on the headunit though, I'm trying to understand what else will I need to buy so that in the end I can have iut installed and it all works, for example, hopefully I can use the steering wheels controls, etc...

i've read poor things abour the metra dash kit, i'd be scared to buy one to be honest.

My car is in the shop right now, installing a Scosche dash kit and a Pioneer Avic f90bt
the double din gps unit does bluetooth, ipod, dvd, as well as other nice features. such as push a button and say play artist metallica or call alexandra. and it will call or play them so you dont ahve to fumble to find anything... also as move navi units you can go to a shop and see if they will bypass the thing so you can watch dvd while in motion. this unit sells avg around 1100$ US. but i got mine brand new for 710$ US after tax (650$ b4 tax) I think you also get a year of the subscrition thing and chose if you want to continue it after you use it basically gives you up to date info ( gas prices around you, movie times, traffic flow etc..) So those are a few cool feats. too

All in all, its good you didnt go with mitsu's navi cause its 2k and doesn't do as much.
Heres a link you've maybe seen on what the avic style models from pioneer look like with scosche kits. hopefully this is a help to you and helps your decision making.

wow those do look clean. But don't you lose the bluetooth on the steering wheel? That was such a big selling point for me. Where is the microphone going to be mounted for your new head-unit?

Here is a picture of mine with the Scosche kit, only I am using the single din. My headunit came with built-in bluetooth, so by using the PAC SWI-PS steering wheel adapter, I was able to keep the bluetooth steering wheel controls. I was also able to mount the microphone in the stock location.

Ok - I read several Metra / JDM / Scosche threads, and from what I read / what I've seen (pics) I would prefer the "JDM Mitubishi Kit", but where can I get it?

And before you answer japanparts.com - I went there and searched, closest I found was 092-002-014, but that's not it...??

That is excellent news!! I was also under the impression that the SWI module only retained use of the audio controls. If it does in fact work with the Bluetooth controls as well, then I'm all over this one.

Anyone else still have the use of their Bluetooth controls using the PAC SWI-PS or other modules?

^ Any updates? Btw any one have any suggestions for a head unit with an external bluetooth microphone without having to purchase the $150 separate kit?
