15 vs 12

guys,

I'm going from single 12" to single 15" Alpine type Rs subs driven by JBL p600.1 mono block. My 12" (sealed) hit clean and hard but not hard enough on highways with my exhaust noise any all.

Therefore I'm moving up to 15" same brand, hoping it'll do the trick. Anyone else running 15"???

a 15" sub will not hit harder than a 12". it will play deeper. 15's move more air so they are slower. if you like the punchy sound of your 12, you will be disappointed on the 15. i love 15's, but the evo's trunk isn't big enuff to make the right size box + it would weigh a ton. the 12 has always been the best sub as it plays punch bass like a 10", but can play almost as low as a 15. i say keep the 12 & run more power to it or get a more powerful sub. i have an Alpine Type-X 12" waiting to go in my 05. handles 1000 watts RMS per coil!!!!!!!!!

Holy misconceptions batman.

A 15 can sound just as good as a 10 or a 12. It (usually) takes more power and in a larger box, though.

As far as "deeper", that's just something based off of the "more cone area = lower the frequency response" rule, but in real fact, the limit differences in the subs wouldnt a) be audible and b) not in your music...

I'd vote for getting a second 12 - More cone area will make it louder...

i personally just bought/installed a 15 inch type R alpine... it sounds great alot deeper than my other 15 inch sub(JBL 200rms) but since u already have a 12 inch sub i would say go with other 12 if u want it to be louder.. Eventually im going to cram 2 15's in my trunk once i get some money but it depends what u like.. my 2 cents

also.. check out ebay for the 15 inch sub if u plan on buying it
i paid 200$(w/ shipping) for mine and it came brand new.. it was the dual 2 ohm one

guys,

I've ordered the 15" and don't want to add another 12" due to weight and space limits.

I'm pwring w/ JBL p600.1, great amp with good punch.

Want to reuse the qlogic sealed box for 12" and rigg it to fit 15" for 1 cubic foot.

what ya think, I 'll just have to try!

my 12" gets droned out w/ exhaust noise, hoping 15" will be noticeable...

Re using the box is a bad idea. Now you'll have a sloppy 15" in too small of a box so the 12 would have provided lower bass extension. Put the woffer in the correct enclosure.

haha, one of the funniest and truest things i've read on here. right now i have a single RE XXX 15" ported in my '02 ES. sounds incredible, hits any note no matter how fast. in a few days, my 2nd XXX will be coming in and i'll be running them in 4 cubes sealed. as you can see, weight/speed are of no concern to me.

another thing... putting a 15 in a 1 cubic foot box is a terrible idea. rigging may be fun and amusing. but, when the results of the rigging are sub par it was a waste. if you have any craftsmanship skills or have any friends with them, just have a friend or local shop build you a 1.5-2 cubic foot sealed box. an undersized box will just make the sub sound like d!ck and affect its power handling as well.

Get a decent box for your sub, if weight is an issue, pay the bucks and get a fiberglass or even a CF box built. or go with an image dynamics IDmax 12, they're very well known for having great power handling, and putting out large volume with small power.

or jsut do what I do, and get a Treo SSX 12.11, and a Treo 1500.1
that should get loud IU hope the DLS front stage keeps up.
