yea, i would have to say they all make good h.u. just depends on what functions you need and look you want....i have only had a jvc which crapped out after a while and now have a sony, which is working fine so far...
my only complaint is why does the factor cd player have a better time playing scratched cd's..i just isn't fair....my sony is bad about that..and my jvc the face plate crapped out...
also remotes are great but i lose mine to much, it will some how manage to disapear??? then magically reappear after a month or so

I've had JVC for a while and loved it, but it got old and now i just bought a new Panasonic one that should be here by the end of the week. I bought the new one because it had a aux input for my mp3 player, sirus radio ready, 2 amp outputs and remote and cool display.

I will agree with everyone else who has said, its all about what u want and what u like. Also how much u are willing to spend and what u are looking for in a head unit.

I would reccomend looking at ebay. u can find some great great deals on that bad boy, there are a few kenwood units on there that retail for like 600$ and sell on ebay for like 300-350$ ish. not bad!

Depending an what you mean by best I have a few suggestions. I worked as a salesman/installer for two years so I have a little experience with about everything out there. Basically it all depends on your budget and if your plannign on sound quality or Bass. As well as how many channels you need for amps and things like that. Best bang for the buck for sound quality is the KDCX-679 Kenwood excelon it has dual burr brown 24BIT DACs which in lamens terms means it sounds REALLY REALLY clean as well as 5v preamp outputs with sub control and bult in croxxovers, it also allows aux input for a PS2 or anything else like that and plays MP3s and WMAs so its a great deck for the 400.00 price range. If your lookign for something not that fancy but want it to last and sound decent go with something liek a pioneer DEH-P740mp or something to that effect it still has the crossovers and audio options as well as high volt RCA outputs. But does not include the burr brown processors and only has a 1`-bit DAC which is what mosrt CD players out there short of some eclipse nakamichi, Kenwood Excelon and the Pioneer DVD or p1r units include. which is a lot more money, but still bang for the buck I have yet to find a deck as well made for 400 bucks as the KDCX-679. Just my 2 cents. goodluck with whatever you decide to get let us know ...

I have sony MP40....only good thing is that it plays mp3's the radio reception sux for whatever reason, but if I had the money I would get the pioneer AVIC-N1, nice headunit, I am sure Alpine has a counter part to this.

blaupunkt hu's are great... so long as you get their upper-middle/top end models. the lower ends malfunction all the time (from experience with multiple units).

dual is like jensen. for the price, and can't see you beating it, but don't set your expectations any higher than the price. if you're on a tight budget, i'd recommend it.

That's good to know. I got a blaupunkt H.U. for a great price ($78) and was just curious as to the quality. I've loved it and have had no problems. My two favorite features are the MP3 playback (plays CD-R and CD-RW) and the Aux input.

I like Alpine because of the glass optical pick up lens. Others use plastic. Eclipse is good too.

Uh, only the cheap brands use plastic...

Pioneer, RF, Pana (except cheap models), etc all use glass for anything that sounds decent...

Unless they recently switched, Pioneer has never used glass, and rockford isn't a good brand IMO.
