OEM tweeters in A pillar.. Help!

I did a search, no luck.

I'm trying to put my JL component speakers in my car. Problem is, the small metal carrier has two screws in it. THESE SCREWS ARE A BEEEEOTCH!!! It feels like they were put in with air tools at 300 lb/ft and then super glued for good measure.

I'm not a small guy at 6'1'' and 200 lbs, but if I try any harder to remove these screws, I'm going to completely strip the head. They're not easy to get to in the first place, and even my drill is laughing at me. What gives? Anyone else have this much trouble? I bent the head on one phillips screwdriver already. They feel like they're welded in. You'd think with things torqued this tight, there would be no rattles in the car, but nope, my rear passenger door (not the door panel) rattles like a **** at speed. Help?

!!!!!!!!!RAGE!!!!!!!!!!

PS, I've put audio crap in every one of the nine cars I've owned prior to this one by myself and never encountered something like this. I'm about to get the dremel out. Somebody stop me!!!

Try an impact wrench maybe? At least it'll help save you from stripping the bolt completely.

I'm going to be installing my replacement component speakers this weekend so I haven't seen how the tweeters are mounted in the A-pillars yet. If they have a rounded head maybe you can grip the head with some vice grips? This is how I removed some of the screws for the rear speakers.

Btw, can you tell me how much room is in there to mount new tweeters? I'd like to put my Focal's in there. Cheers, Mike.

I had trouble with mine too, particularly the lower one, since you can not get a normal driver in there. I used a ratching 90 degree craftsman screwdriver, which allowed me to put pressure against the driver, and get some leverage. If you rounded the head too much, it will be tough to even get vise grips or something on the head, you might have to pull the dash off to be able to get a easy-out or something like that on it.

Not directly related but the OEM screws on the radio brackets were also in tight as a ****.

I ended up rounding off the head on one of them completely and it was stuck. Luckily I thought quick, took off the OEM faceplate off the radio and there was more than enough space to get a needle nosed pliers in. Just loosed the friggin screw from inside the radio case instead... way easier.

I don't think there is any similar type solution for your problem but just in case you can somehow get to the back of the screw I thought I'd share...

(raises hand) Yep, I ran into the exact problem with the damn tweeter mount. Luckily my friend had a 90 degree ratchet wrench also.

I don't know if you used crossovers on your speaker installation, but the most difficult part was threading speaker wires thru the rubber hose that connects the door to the car. F'n eh! Each side took like 2hrs to thread that wire through, even with a coat hanger!

Yea I found out about the tweeters a couple days ago. But right now I'm just working on putting the rear speakers in tonight. I think I'll try the tweeters again on my next day off.
