Well, first off you went with an undersized driver, in a stock location. Those aren't high points.
Then, you went with Sony... and while their headunits are marginally okay, their speakers suck my left ********, and not in the good way. More like in the way a girl with a snaggletooth and a locking jaw would suck it.
What can you do? Any or all of the below selections should help you out.
1. Buy new speakers... NOT SONY
2. Get an Amp... NOT SONY
3. Build some new baffles, or at least check to see that the locations you have now are baffled.
4. Drop a match on this car, and start over.

The optimum size for the Lancer is 6.75"... but since nobody makes them in this size, go with a 6.5" (yes... there are 6.75" speakers out there... but they're not really great) For the front, I'd go with a component setup (as I've done the last 3 sets of speakers I've installed)
Don't skimp... go with something NICE, like Focal, Adire, CDT, Crystal, (or the nice handpicked/handmade set I've got for sale! https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/sh...threadid=39439 ) etc.

I think you'll likely find reduced bass response from many aftermarket speakers, except maybe some nice components simply because the stock speakers are made from paper which actually has particuarly good characteristics for bass response (albeit horrible durbility and any other range characteristics.) With any aftermarket stuff, you should find you get much crisper highs simply from having real tweets.
If the volume is enough for you, then I'd say an amp isn't necessary - it doesn't seem like you were going for a really loud system, just better.
So anyway, I got this far without bashing Sony, which has been hard, but I'll add in my piece that I've never found a Sony product from any of their lines (VCRs, computers, stereos (home/car), speakers) to be worthwhile in the least. I've had utter and complete failures of devices from all their product lines with no abuse whatsoever.
I'd suggest if you can, return what you got. At the very least, get some 6 3/4" speakers instead of 5 1/4"s. Any shop that put those in for you without telling you that they are very undersized probably isn't worth visiting again. For an idea of what fits at least, you can visit Crutchfield.com - they are a great site for information (albeit not for pricing always). If you're new to stereos though, they can be great as their customer support excels above any company I've ever dealt with in this field or any other. They'll give you all you need to wire up to you car as well as infinite support and warranty. Other places online that have cheaper prices are sounddomain.com and ikesound.com. Both should be helpful too and have better selections I think (at least last I checked).
Final suggestion - get a subfwoofer or or put the stock speakers back in the back positions. The crisp highs from aftermarket speakers won't really be appreciated from back there anyway if you have nicer speakers up front and you'll have another set of stock speakers to swap in there a few years down the road when those have worn out. Having aftermarkets in the front and the stocks in the rear will give you a decent economy sound though.

thanks neil.
i think i'm gonna ask the stereo shop to put my stock speakers back to my car and i'll try to sell my 5 1/4 on ebay. Or i'll go up to bestbuy and checkout some good 6 1/2.
