Do you really mean behind the dash?

I guess you tried putting it in front, and the trim wouldn't reach the deck pins... right? There's an easy way to fix that (if that's your problem obviously).

Take off the panel that surrounds the Deck and take out the Deck. Get some longer screws (i kept the stock ones) and put some washers between the deck brackets and the frame. The washers will act as spacers. I've put 4 washer on each screws, which braught the deck maybe 1/4 inch forward. That 1/4 inch was just what I needed to put the trim on.

What kind of head unit is it? I previously had a sony that fit awsome with a little bit taken off the trim ring. But the pioneer that I currently have has a god awful gap. My plan is to go to home depot and pick up a very small peice of foam weather stripping that will fill the gap, I have done it befor and it comes out with a very nice professional looking finnish. Like said befor pull the head out and try it at different depths, most trim rings will fit on the outside.

Here is the old head:

I have a poineer deck, black foam tape sounds like a solution.

yes I tried to fir the trim ring ouside of the dash, but there wasnt enough space to get it to the clips. I have about a 1/8th to a 1/4 inch gap all the way around it.

The problem with doing the spacers with a pioneer deck is the bezel is about an inch. If you mount it to have the bezel on the outside it just looks like crap. By keeping the bezel under the dash plate the front of the radio is flush with the dash. I do agree though in most situations the washers would work great, just not with a pioneer head.

My stereo is mounted with the trim ring behind the dash and looks great that way. I can't stand stereos that aren't mounted flush. If you take off the dash panel, you can see it's just plastic that surrounds the hole that the stereo pokes through - I cut all that off since you can't see it from the front anyway. Then I mounted the whole stereo back about 1/4" and now it's flush, with a trim ring. I've got a JVC KD-LH 3150, for reference, but once the vehicle registry is back up, y'all can see the pictures.

There is a really easy solution. Pull the radio back out. Take a 9/32's (I believe thats the size I used) drill bit and drill (place the bit so that it is between the rivets (they are were those little nipples are on the inside of the brackets) in the brackets and the regular mounting holes) new holes for both brackets. Mount back to radio and remount radio in car. Put the dash bezel back on and now you should be able to put the trim ring on and not have any gaps at all. No washers or tape or anything. Just good quality craftsmanship.
