I think we probably need more like 110 more hp just to compete with other Stock FWD cars under the $20k price.

Where did you come up with this?? There's a 260 HP car for under 20k? I must have missed that coupon.

The Dodge SRT-4 is rated at 215 WHP stock, and we are at 120-130 Whp stock

"Brooke McClelland wrote: According to their chassis dyno, this Neon puts out 223 HP and 250 lb-ft of torque at the wheels! ... In comparison, their test of a 2002 Nissan Sentra SE-R, which is rated at 175 HP, put out just 141 HP at the wheels.

Apex Technology has dynoed the SRT-4 and found 248 hp - at the wheels!

Produced at the Belvidere (Ill.) Assembly Plant, the Dodge SRT-4 listed at $19,995 in 2003, $20,495 in 2004, and $20,995 in 2005. Production appears to have increased quite a bit from original estimates."

It's $5.00 under $20k to start. It is the fastest in the sport compact class, however. Most econo saloons start around $12-$13k and do much worse in the HP department than the Lancer.

We don't have a bad car performance wise...and I'm not wrong to say that. There should be a "lancerm.net" Because there are so many people that come in here, browse the Evolution forums, then get down to the Lancer forums and post about how slow and underpowered a base Lancer is. Many are trying to draw a parallel to the Lancer Evolution (and other performance cars) when no such parallel can exist.

Find me a new car that starts at $14,000 and is more well equipped and more powerful than the base $14,000 Lancer...you'll be searching for a while. (I'm not aiming any of this at you, Bladed, this is a generalized rant )

lol I agree with you on the starting price point, which is why i went with the lancer. I got a fully equipped lancer with navigation, a decent sound system, paddle shifters (It feels like i'm playing a video game, but i like video games) and a 30 gb hard drive for about the same price as a bare SRT4. Plus i like the look of the lancer better.

With a turbo, i think we could keep up with a SRT4, and outperform them in autoX or very curvy tracks.

not to mention the srt4 would have been double in insurance costs....the current fastest car for under 20K is actually the new v6 mustang

The SRT-4 is not a fair comparison. It is not the standard for the sub-$20k market. It's basically a freak of nature. If you look at the other sub-$20k cars, you see HP in the high-100 range.

The Lancer's HP is smack in the middle of the field, however, the weight is what's really hurting it. Civics have a little less HP (140) and a lot less torque (123) but they also weigh nearly 400 lbs less than the Lancer.

That being said, besides turbo, you could run nitrous and gain 50 hp. I don't know if anyone has tried spraying on a 4B11 engine yet, but I imagine it can take some level of beating. The rods are forged, but the pistons aren't, so they're going to determine what the limit is.

The SRT-4 is a Caliber now. The '08 SRT-4 does use Mitsubishi's TD04 turbo (and we already know about the GEMA engine), but it's a 2.4L as well. Comparisons might be better made when/if the 2009 Lancer gets the 2.4 too. Base Lancers get more bhp than base Calibers though. With the Lancer, you can add more horses, but don't need to to keep up with other stockers in the class. Oh, and starting MSRP for the '08 SRT-4 is $22,995.

It's in the marketing material and also in the service manual. Both the 4B11 & 4B11T have forged rods.
