Royal Purple oil
exactly! royal purple is a good oil but buts a little too good i think. it cleans so much and so good you need to change it like every 500 or 1000 miles deponding on how hard you drive your car. its great stuff for say a racecar but IMO i feel its not so good for a daily driver unless you like to change your oil every 1000 miles and for me that would be every week haha i drive alot. i use mobile 1. im not saying royal purple sux or anything but i feel its more race oriented
just my 2 cents
just my 2 cents
Of course Royal Purple is going to quote a favorable test on their website. I've heard too many horror stories about Royal Purple to trust them, stick to a more reputable company that is big into motorsports if you actually want an oil that can stand up to that kind of stress.
One of the problems when Royal Purple 10W-40 was tested is that it sheared out of grade very quick. This was through ASTM Testing procedures.
Mobil 1 EP, on the other hand, is a very good oil. If AMSOIL was to go out of business, (don't see that with their impressive growth) that is the oil I would run.
I always see people throw out the Viscosity of the oils.. ie: 5W-30, 5W-20 etc...
Most (including most mechanics) don't know what they actually stand for. The number on the left, when followed by the "W" is the Winter viscosity of the oil measured at 32 Degrees F. The lower the number, the easier the engine will start in cold temps, for the most part..
The number on the left is the viscosity of the oil at 212 Degrees F.
Many OEM's are recommending lighter weight oils these days to meet their CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) I believe Honda and Ford were the first to use these light weight oils, and I think Toyota came around in there for their Hybrid.
At the time, although not very well known, better fuel mileage came at a cost. Engine longevity suffered by an estimated 30% as most of these "Lightweight" oils could not protect the engines properly.
Mits is no different. the Lancer is calling for a 5W-20 and there is no difference in engine design from previous. It is for fuel mileage.
Although today, oils have changed also. AMSOIL had a 5W-20, and still does, but it is a Hydro-Cracked Product. About a year ago, they came out with 100% Synthetic 0W-20. That is what I was running in my Lancer until recently. Only because I had some old formula 0W-30 that needed to get used up... LOL

BTW, I had an old 4 Runner that recommended 5w30 at the factory, but since it had well over 100k my mechanic recommended I run 5w40. It ran much better after I did this.
The only real good part about the K&N though is the nut on the end. After that their performance can be beat.
They are a compressed cellulose (paper) filter. They have a pretty decent Micron rating, but do not seem to hold the particulate very well.
Cut aparts show the used filters to be relatively clean compared to other filters. Although the AMSOIL filter is a little more expensive at just over $13.00, it is second to none in both Micron Rating at 15 Micron Absolute and their ability to keep particulate in it's media.
Next choice for me would be the WIX filter at around $5.00 for the 57092. Although the M-1 Filter does alittle better job filtering, I do not like it's construction as well as the WIX.
Then I would go to the Mobl 1 Filter and then the Purolator Pure One.
To each their own, but all 5 of my vehicles, my Motorcycle and even the lawn tractor have AMSOIL Filters.
Oil is the Lifeblood of your engine, the filter is the kidney.

If i was doing extended intervals with my oil i would definitely go with the Amsoil filter. But from what i have seen the stock filter does a great job and its just under 6 bucks.
Over 80% of my Mits Customers are using the AMSOIL SSO 0W-30... It is a fantastic oil.
The oil is the lifeblood of your engine and the oil filter would be like the kidney.
Extended drains or not, petroleum or Synthetic, AMSOIL or not, if you want to take care of your car, the AMSOIL Filter is unbeatable with a conservative 15 Micron Rating.
