i would check to see what parts of your engine is blown, i blew mine but to find out the piston rings melted, the block was fine. it is possible you can reuse your block, get some forged rods with pistons, port and polished head, new valves and springs, i think you would spend more but have a more bullet-proof setup simular to mine. my 2 cents of course.

Your car was on fire??? This can't be good. I've had my fair share of blowing up the lancer motors and i can say it never caught on fire.

Even the RRM drag car which blew the block to smitherines(could see straight threw it ) never had a fire issue. I think there is more to this than meets the eye.

Ohh well, what is done is done. I agree with link. Get the motor apart and see where the damage is. Also see what the fire may have damaged. Most likely the head will need repaired(3-400 bucks if you get it ported/polised...150-200 for normal repair/vlv job) and get some new pistons in there. The rods should be ok but you'll know once you get it apart. Check out the rod bearings for flat spots or major wear. This will let you know if the rods could be in jeopardy. I doubt it though as i blew mine 3 times(2NOS and one Overboost). All i did was rehone the block... have the head done... and drop in new pistons. Never had the rods changed or bearings. Just cleaned and inspected it all.

You should be fine but it will probably be about 1k to get it all fixed back up. If you get JE pistons slightly more.

Me and a friend of mine (Master mechanic) put it in... Everything with the install went great, everything with use of the car thereafter worked great. I love the RRM IC Turbo kit, great product. Made my car a bit of a sleeper I spose you could say. If your advice would be to get some sort of diagnostic test on the engine and see what needs to be repaired as compared to buying a whole new engine, I'd then ask if anyone knew some respectable shops in Orlando FL who could do this... Im looking for the cheapest and most effective way to get this beast back on the road and burnin rubber the same as it was before.

Reading posts about blown engines makes me very uneasy about installing my turbo (I'm only waiting for my up/down pipes from RRM to get here)

How much boost were you running?

The fire more than likely resulted from a blown head gasket which leaked oil onto the hot exhaust.

whats weird is i've never been able to blow the headgasket... it's a great gasket acually...

Also to this date i've never heard of it either??

It almost is like the oil supply/return may have came off... this could have caused a fire issue from the oil. I myself had a bad exhaust leak at the header once that nearly ate thru my return line. If that had happened all my oil would have left the engine and that would have been bad.

I did see a guy have the same issue that came into the shop... he saw the smoke but only under boost... so he came in and he had the leak on the return side... it was shooting up oil only the header and since the oil flows depend on rpm... when he was gunning it for boost it shot the oil onto the header. Normal driving you didn't really see it. His was caused due to a collapsing of the oil return pipe. When he tightened the clamp he overtightened it and it crushed the tube.

Anyway... my advice is to get the manuels from the dealer(100-150 bucks) then do everything yourself with your mechanic buddy. It may take you a little longer but it will be cheaper and you will be able to know that car inside and out before you're done. Also you'll know it was done right as only you will be up to your standards. The only thing you'll probably want to outsource is having the block honed/checked, the head repair, and getting the new pistons pressed on. You may spend about 500bucks for that stuff and since your doing all the other work yourself you'll just be paying for parts.

That is how i did all 4 times i took my motor down. Had the books the first two times and now i know them by heart i swear. Anyway this will also assist you later if you want to save cash in doing some troubleshooting and maintenance as the books tell you everything you'll ever need to know about the car. Wiring/tranny/engine/interior/suspension/etc... its all in the books. Best money you'll ever spend i swear.

Email me. Something happened that could not have happened unless something was installed wrong. We can help you out with figuring out what happened there. It is not a head gasket. We can also get you a motor for quite a bit cheaper than what you were quoted.
