Ignition systems
Gotta few questions about ignition systems, like MSD. I want to put one in my lancer ls, but which one? The DIS-2 looks like it would do, but the SCI is made spacifically for compact cars. I'm open to suggestions!! Also, where should it be mounted?
you would have to use the DIS-2, the SCI is for a ignition system with a distributor. but what do you really need this for anyway, not to bash, but this kind of thing is really meant for a more powerful/pontential car, IMO this would not benefit the lancer that much. Better to spend your money on handling mods and simple bolt-ons. Mouting would also be another problem, the engine bays don't have a whole lot of space, that unit is 9.5 x 4.5 x 2, you might be able to fit it behind the alternator on the firewall, but that'd be a tight squeeze... But if you do, please let us know what kind of gains you get (dyno results, not butt-dyno). Best of luck. That's my .02 (more like 1.02 though)
To echo tward, upgrading ignition is usually reserved for highly modified cars that require more spark than stock. I don't know what mods you have, but a Lancer requiring that much spark is rare.
Other than possibly blowing the coil packs, it couldn't hurt the car, though.

DOnt know if the Lancer ignition system is similar to the Mirage, but if it is, MSD wont be an easy install. Our cars are dual-coil, waste-spark style ignition where half the cylinders fire out of phase of the others. WIth MSD what happens, is that you eventually end up frying the coil, or since the ECU cant handle it, you fry that sometimes as well.
To make the MSD work on our cars, you will need to run after market coil packs and build a feedback circuit like the toyota supra guys have to.
Another alternative for ignition for those financially adept is the Electromotive unit. Also, allegedly the AEM C2DI is designed to work with DSM waste spark systems with up to 6 coilpacks, so this might be an option. While I do know of someone in PR running the Electromotive, I dont know anyone that is running the AEM one though.
