4g63 swap

I am getting a lancer in the next week or so and I will have roughly 3k or 4k of extra cash since i don't have to put anything down. So I am thinking of doing a 4g63 swap immediately or adding a turbo kit once they are available. I just need more info on how the 4g63 bolts up and if i should also get a tranny from a GST eclipse to handle the power. I emailed RRE and haven't heard back from them yet. I am real serious about doing it as soon as I get my car so I would like to know. Thanks

Im not 100% sure but i dont think the 4G63 engine will bolt right into your lancer i think you have to make all new mounts but im not sure. and yes if you do go with an engine swap i would get a new tranny i do not think the stock lancer tranny could handle that power.

just new mounts? thats not too bad. I can get a "decent" JDM 4g63 with turbo and tranny for 1800. Not bad but the tranny is an AWD so I would have to get a tranny from a GST right? Wouldn't I also need a computer from an eclipse? I haven't heard back from RRE yet. If a whole engine swap ends of being too much of a pain, could I swap heads with a 4g63 so I get DOHC and it should lower the engine compression a bit meaning more boost! Correct me if I am wrong. I just want to know what the best upgrade is. Thanks

It's called having parents that won't co-sign on a car that is two doors plus insurance for a 17 year old guy is really high on a 1g or 2g eclipse, believe me I would MUCH rather have an eclipse than a lancer. ITS CALLED LIFE, not everyone can afford an EVO or an eclipse. I wish I could but if I could afford one, then I wouldn't be asking you guys questions about performance since I would be at RRE all the time.

Well, after reading stuff for about an hour, I found this at RPW's site.

Whilst we acknowledge that the 4G63 Turbo motor is a formidable motor, to expense in fitting this to the Lancer vehicles can be very expensive. Instead we have shown the easiest upgrades which can make a lot of horsepower if done correctly. All of the 4G92 / 93 motors can be turboed very easily This motor can create a lot of horsepower and would fit straight into any of the lancers with no need to modify anything including gearboxes etc.

For those with the 4G61 motor - the 4G63 motor can be very heavily modified to create very high levels of horsepower. Its larger cubic capacity will enhance torque considerably and the addition of DOHC will allow it to breath. Once again this is a direct bolt on without modifications

So I guess a swap is out of the question since a turbo kit costs around 3k, so i assume a swap will be at least twice as much. Not cool. So anyways, I think I am just going to see how RRE's mods are when they actually come out. Thanks for all the help. Although I would like to know how much power the tranny can take if I upgrade the clutch.

I didn't see this thread earlier, I guess you already answered your own question.

BTW, keep in mind that ALL 1G/2G Eclipse 4G63 will NOT fit into the Lancer/5G Mirage without major weiding in the engine bay, since that's engine is located on the "opposite" side compare the 4G15/4G93/4G64 in the Mirage/Lancer.

A GS-T tranny will not work w/ the CN9A (EVO IV+) 4G63 because of the reason mentioned above. EVO I-III 4G63 is on our driver side will the EVO IV+ one is on our passenger side.

Without cutting the body panel, it's almost impossible to covert a Lancer/Mirage into AWD. To keep it FWD, either you find a AWD EVO tranny and weided off the Center diff, OR, use the 1.8 4G93 tranny (which might be damaged easily with all those torque).

For a budget of 3-4K, the best choice would be a turbo kit, but I guess you will have to install it yourself. A decent kit should be around 4K...no $ left for labor....

Good luck

Thanks for the info, after looking in the engine bay of an OZ, i realized what you said. Too much work putting a 4g63 in there. Where can i find a EVO engine? Here in Colorado, it is illegal to put a engine in that is older than the car for emmisions sake. Not cool. But would a JDM be exempt? Thanks

Based on the info you give me, the ONLY "legal" engine would be the EVO VII 4G63. However, I highly doubt that you can get it within you budget. Let alone you also have to get the tranny, ECU, wiring harness...heck, you even have to revamp the whole front suspension just to compensate the added weight... not cool for a limited budget....(I was on the same boat)

My best bet is, get a decent turbo kit (wait, don't get the first run of ANY kit) and wait till user's comments are out, then decide which kit to buy.

Or you can always join the line waiting for the EVO

Thanks for the info. I can only imagine how much a EVO VII engine is. Plus the tranny ECU etc. It really wouldn't be worth it then. A US lancer is a nice economy car but its not made to be what the EVO is. I guess a turbo kit is the way to go. I have been talking to RRE and they say it will be about 4k for them to do a turbo job since they won't be selling kits. That is pretty high but not too bad considering their reputation. Thanks again

Given their expertise and reputation, I say that's the way to go...
