Intake Options
Ok, I bought the K&N Short Ram a while back, and yesterday I decided to swap the K&N tube with the stock rubber one since the 2 different tubes place the filter in 2 different places in the engine bay. So my question is, which of the 2 positions (if any) is more beneficial, even if just by a tiny tiny bit. I don't care if one looks better than the other. I just figured that using the stock tube, it moves the filter farther away from the headers and engine, but it moves it back more away from the front where the air comes in. I'm also planning on maybe making my own heat shield for the stock hose setup to connect the stock intake induction tube thing like RRM's intake.
I'm just messing with it for now til I decide which one I want more.

The altered way you have it set-up is awesome. Props to you for trying something new. The altered set-up is like the RRM set up but better, because it is a bit farther from the headers. The only drawback is that you spent money for the K&N set-up, so you might as well use it until you get headers.
*sort of reminds me of the Injen set-up, but with a bigger filter.

actually i thought rrm does the same thing, just with a different filter and a heat shield. Oh well, and on the price, The K&N Typhoon intake was about $50 cheaper than rrms. So now I'm out looking for a flat piece of metal to create my heat shield. Also, driving around today, I noticed that the throttle response is noticeably better. And the sound is different. I'm pretty happy with the new setup. Except the stock hose makes the filter sit down on the wheel well and vibrates loudly as i brake fr stop signs and stuff...soooo, I had to make my own "prop" to keep it up with a coat hanger just for now. When I figure out the heat shield stuff i'll get a better support under there. But the coat hanger works better than i expected.
umm...I think I have a stupid question>could I just go buy a filter (with correct diameter of course) and it will fit right into the stock hosing? Meaning like a ~$50 short ram intake?

yeah you HAVE to have a maf sensor adaptor. cause when you take off the stock air box, the maf sensor is just flat with 4 holes to connect the adaptor to. but i used to know a website that sold it for $19. I'll keep looking for it and see. It saves you a lot of money to just buy a filter and adaptor, then make something to hold the filter and maf sensor level. for some reason, now when i have my car in park, the rpms idle rough. it sits around 700-800 usually. but now it sits there and every now and then dips down to about 400-500 then bounces back up a couple times. can anyone tell me why this is happenening.

no cause i didnt disconnect the maf sensor at all, but i was thinking about if i should reset it still. Ill go do that today and see if it fixes it. thanks
I wanted to try this. I have RRMs sri kit. I really like the way drucea did it. I was just playing with my stock intake tube... I have -5es, it has a little intake between hood and radiator, with plastic pipe flowing to old hook up. I was going to try cutting the plastic intake a bit so it would bring (some . . .) fresher air to K$N filter. With the way Drucea didv it, I don't think I'd need to cut the pipe at all. and like someone sait, it keeps it a little further away from the engine, for whatever that's worth. I'm gonna go play tomorrow!! I don't want to fabricate a bolt down though, so I'll prolly just cut a little off the end on my stock intake tube. Untill I can have somone install the airvent in my hood for the sri.

and just for sh!its and giggles, I'm gonna mess around with it some more and make a super duper short ram intake by getting rid of that stock throttle body tube and using something to connect the maf sensor straight up to the throttle body, but ill have to figure something out for that pcv tube...we'll see

Ok, after messing around some more, I figure this is as close to the throttle boody i can get it, and as far from the engine i can get with a short ram. So, I went ahead and made a heat shield/air duct holder. Not really a heat shield I guess cause it gets hot too and the intake still sucks up hot air, but it holds up the stock air duct. And I'm quite proud how well it turned out. Let me know what you think of my work...

yeah i know the setup is the same as most kits that come with a heat shield, i just figured I'd save a few bucks and make one of my own...was also a little more fun than just ordering
