How-To : Port a stock Intake Manifold
Old how to thread I know but thought I would add that placing a wad of paper towel into the runners right past the grinding area helps to keep shavings from falling in too. This is what I did when I ported mine and I was able to pull the paper towel out after each runner was ported and had globs of shavings (most of it) come out with it.
to port our intake manifold the plenum really needs to be cut so you can reach back in there farther. the most you should do to a stock intake manifold with no headwork should be a clean up. you are actually creating a pocket when you port just the beginning of the runners which causes a low vacuum area that causes the air to have less turbulence.
I've thought about just "polishing", no real removal of material, just a reduction in friction like I think you are saying. Any real benefits though you think? I am referring to a turbo'd engine in a base lancer btw, I don't care so much if there are benefits to a N/A lancer.
porting
What is porting the TB or is everyone talking about the Intake Manifold?
What do you actually do? Just grind it down a little?? Or increase the openings? And if second, how do you know how big to go??

The intake runner ports are smaller than the ports on the head meaning you can ground out some of the inside material on the intake runners to match the ports on the head giving you better flow
