08 GTS CVT testing by Blacksheepdj
6/25 update:
I've given up on testing the 0-60 time. My numbers were too varied and I'm not really a consistent enough driver to get solid data. So I'm going to leave it to the true number ******.
What I did do instead was some real-life testing...
Autocross
The Lancer held up well. Handling was solid and predictable. Very solid for a stock car. I'll be very interested to see how the 08 stands up to some modifications in the future.
Traction was a serious issue on the stock All-Season tires. Some of this may relate to my "aggressive" driving style. I'll definitely be upgrading to better rubber before I try AX again.
Power was good, especially in manual mode. The gearing was good and I never needed to leave first and second.
Racing
Hit up my local racetrack with a buddy. Runs were not timed.
Me: 2008 GTS with CVT, RRM intake
Him: 2005 OZ, manual transmission; with SRI, Kamikaze header, RRM test pipe, Buschur catback
From a stop: OZ wins easily, but GTS catches up and passes. No doubt this relates to the horrible take-off of the auto CVT tranny. We even switched cars, so the driver was not the issue.
Fron a roll @ 40mph: GTS wins. Pulls ahead and stays ahead.
Thoughts: some of this is surprising. Some isn't. The manual's ability to make more low-end power gave it an easy advantage in the "from a stop" trials, even with the mods that are aimed more at high-end HP. The 4B11 seems to make more power when it's rolling, so the win from a roll makes perfect sense to me.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
0-60 testing
June 8th - 10.6 and 10.7 in manual mode, 11.7 in D
June 9th - 8.63 in manual
All tests performed with an aging GTech Pro unit... take it for what it's worth (and with a grain of salt).

damn 0-60 in 10 f'in seconds? that just dont sound right.. its first gear im telling you. Try first gear in manual, then once you get to the sweet spot put it into auto, and itll constantly keep it there without shifting gears giving you the best accel. Atleast thats what i imagine and what others stated.

I think it's the GTech. On a different freeway today, I pulled 8.63 in manual (and that includes spinning a tire on the gravel at the side of the highway). Time to just buy a stopwatch...
I will agree that it's first gear. This car leaves the line like a snail.

alright, 8.63 sounds more like it, i expect it to be slower than 7.7 due to lack of launching ability.. but 3 seconds slower? yeah right... lol go get a stop watch! I'm gonna go find a stretch and do times for myself soon with a passanger. Even though having a passanger would slow the car down
.
Damn first gear! damn it to hell! due to my car being in the shop i had to drive my 5.0 today.. and my god does it take off, i almost forgot how much i <3 v8. If it werent for fuel economy id say they shoulda put the outlander's V6 in the GTS.. just imagine..........

And the 8.63 included me spinning the tires a bit on gravel. Stopwatch coming soon. I know there's one somewhere in the house, but I can't find it. I'll probably just buy one.
OK, my freaking iPod has a stopwatch. Need a codriver now...

Well, it's been tough getting times. Everytime I'm free and ready to go out, I can't find someone to hold the stopwatch.
Tried some very basic testing (using the second timer on the CD player) and got a 0-60 of 10 seconds in manual. I might not be a consistent enough driver to get decent testing.
