I'm sorry, but I still don't get it. I watched a guy put one on. There is very little loosening of the bolt that holds the pulley to the block. Its reversed threaded so lefty tighty, righty loosy. This is done so it doesn't come off from driving.

This thread is 26 freaking pages and simple questions like "its confusing some ppl say counter clockwise and some say clockwise.." are still popping up.

The pulley is spring loaded and you physically push the pulley in a 2 O'Clock direction while looking at the motor from passenger side looking into the wheel well. If your under with your head in the passenger wheel well looking up, then it gets pushed up and to your left.

There are some methods of getting a large tire iron and using it as a lever to move the pulley and release tension on the belt.

Your best bet is using two sets of hands. This is not an easy install with one person as you have to apply pressure on the pulley while trying to get the belt back on through all the right paths.

If you are unclear and actually unscrew the pulley bolt, I would assume its a super pain in the azz to get it back in.

The pulley, as far we know, is a great product. The directions are absolutely a sham, embarrassment and there is no excuse for not spending the time to write a detailed paragraph or two on how to get it installed. Please if anyone still has their original directions, please post them. I would like to see others reactions to looking at these very simplistic directions / diagram and their comments after having actually installed it. Its not even funny how bad it is. A perfect example of how vague these directions are: One of the last requirements states you need a "strong air gun" What the hell is "strong"? thats like saying you need a silver bolt grabber. How about a "pneumatic air gun with X lbs of torque", or whatever the actually specs should be.

I'm not even about to attempt to say what instructions I have posted here is 100% correct. I tried to get it on myself and realized that If I screwed up I would have a inoperable car. So I went to a garage and had them put it on. It took two guys an hour to understand which way it needed to go, document the belt path, figure out wich way it was threaded and actually complete the install. I'm only repeating what I observed for the benefit of others.

Is this any indication of what to expect for a turbo installation?

The installation is really not that complicated once you figure out which way to turn the bolt. The main thing to know is YOU'RE NOT UNSCREWING THE BOLT. If it starts to loosen, you're doing it wrong, so screw it the other way to tighten it back up. When it's tightened as it should be, if you make like you were gonna tighten it some more it will shift upwards, causing the actual pulley to move and the belt to loosen. As far as the impact wrench goes, you just need to torque it for a bit before it undoes that bolt. I used like a $150 Kobalt electric one from Lowe's and it came off when I torqued it for longer than seemed like would help (it didn't seem like the wrench was doing anything but spinning at first). There's information in this thread as to how many ft-lbs of torque it needs. If you read from the beginning, you should be able to find everything you need. If not, hopefully this helps. I did it myself and had never done this type of thing before, so this is pretty much what I learned.

For a lot of us, the install was pretty easy. It took me about 15 minutes. The instructions do suck, but only for people who must rely on them. Anyone with experience doing it most likely skimmed over them and then got to work.

I don't know if the turbo is going to come with instructions, but if you know you couldn't get by without them...you shouldn't be attempting the install. And, just like the pulley, if you have experience doing turbo installs, the instructions aren't going to be a major issue. In many instances, experience trumps instruction books.

This is so true. When it comes to a major "if you screw this up, your motor blows up" operation, there's no room for "learning on the job."

i see it this way.. i could get something from rrm thats about 120 bucks like a carbon fiber something...that does nothing for your performance... OR you can spend around 120 bucks to get something back in return i.e. hp and all the other good stuff..

A pulley doesn't make HP...it kind of just shuffles around what you already have.

It's worth it in my opinion...it gives the impression of a more free-revving engine, so it becomes more fun to drive. If you have a 5-speed or Sportronic CVT, get the pulley. If you just have a regular auto with no sport mode, spend the money on something else.
