Tim, please keep in mind that I am not trying to one up or jump on anyone's post(s). What I am trying to do, at least with this one single thread that Boe started is to keep the discussion based on more evidence versus opinion, for example people actually dremeling the filters to examine the construction of endcaps, bypass valves, etc. But consider the following about oil filter bypass valves. Even with new oil on startup the bypass valve is most likely open or partially open due to restriction to flow. Under WOT conditions, the resistance to flow by the filter media, even when new, means the filter is once again at least bypassing some oil. So dirty *** oil or not, the bypass valve is cracked open under higher and high load conditions and may be open more often than you think.

I guess I've turned it into a quest, but as my Lancer approaches a whopping 4,000 miles (in a year what a joke, I might as well ride a 10 speed I guess), I will run synthetic M1 5w-30, post UOAs, and debunk the old wives tales of synthetic in the 4G94 being too thin for the oil pump and not being able to protect the motor. I posted a lot of mfg's stats and facts about the whole synthetic is too thin old wives tale and I saw where it went..nowhere.

IMHO a large portion of Evonet knowledge is based on opinion whereas some issues would be better served from a factual standpoint. So when I see a comment that "7k is good for a filter", I take exception to it in the sense that there's nothing statistic or scientific as proof. My first question is always "What is good?" and "Why is it good?"

It kind of cracks me up that many Evo owners around here have an exceptionally high interest in HP mods with an almost immediate requirement to see a dino chart for the actual gains, yet when it comes to oil it degrades to a heresay competition. "Use this it's good, don't use that it's too thin," without anything scientific like UOA to back it up.

If Evonet is to be a usable reference on these matters, more is needed, at least in my book. Ok enough, time for a
