thats pretty wierd. double check all your connections. make sure your MAF is plugged back in. make sure the EGR valve is screwed all the way in.
what did you use to clean it out? what shape was the gasket in when you pulled it off?
also you can try adjusting the idle screw and raise or lower the idle to a decent position.
what exactly is happening?

cleaning it with a damp towel is no good. You need to get some throttle body cleaner with one of those straws, and stick it inside the EGR valve and spray the inside, and wipe with some paper towels. cos thats where all the dirt is, you also need to spray inside the Manifold, where the EGR connects.
try re-cleaning the EGR valve with TB spray and reconnect it.
how exactly did you clean it with the damp towel? you may have damaged it while cleaning if you didn't do it properly

you probably shouldn't have used brake cleaner. I would still advise getting throttle body cleaner and using that.
also what condition is the gasket in? you may just need to buy a new one of those
how long did you reset the car for? did you try adjusting the idle screw?

well thats really strange. from what you said though, it seems you've killed the EGR valve. go get some TB cleaner and give it a good spray, cos brake cleaner is not the right thing to use.
also check all your vac lines, you may have knocked one loose too.

vacum pulls the lever which opens air passage inside
