I'd really love your DOHC head but oh well. Question I have is though, why does the Lancer intake manifold "bulb" and look like a wine bottle for lack of a better description where as all these 4G93 manifolds have a much more standard looking plenum chamber?

As for the intake mani design, DIM could probably explain it better than me. I do know the G94 intake mani flows better overall and for low end grunt than the 'log style" or "wine bottle-like".

With the plenum the internal volume is just as important (maybe more?) in determining your powerband as the shape. Smaller plenum chambers are more suitable for lower rpm power. I believe with the G94 manifold it is designed similar to an equal length header pushing the runner's to a closer more common area to pull air from to possibly help keep the airflow more similar between the cylinders. With turbocharged vehicles you can somewhat get around the intake manifold tuning based on the turbocharger you have but the manifold will still affect the basic power curve.

Very interesting. Yogi, are you aware of any wreckers in NZ who carry the CE GSR's 4g93T (like yours pictures)? I'm very interested.

You could probably try kempys a try.

Some info on the 4g93T from the previous Gen1 motor.

Here's a reason for raity amongst the Gen 2 motors, lesser extent to Gen 1 motors. It has taken me almost 2.5 yrs to finally found a logical reason for its rarity.

"Q. I have a late model Lancer/Mirage. What engine can I upgrade to?"

'A. This is a tricky one.... especially in the later CE shape where the gearbox is on the passenger side of the car. The only turbo option that you have is the 4G93 (1.8 ex Jap GSR Lancer) or the EVO IV/V/VI. Either of these options are VERY expensive (usually prohibitive for now). These are too new to obtain in quantities at the moment, and the MIVEC is the only other option (non-turbo, and equally as hard to get). DO NOT be tempted to try and turbo your existing engine- the expense and engine/driveline breakages are not worth the effort. If you are hell-bent on a turbo Lancer, you must be prepared to wait for one of these engines to become available. And remember, these are NOT cheap- expect upwards of $7000 for a complete half cut, less panels.

Why so hard to get and expensive? Well, virtually all of the Mitsubishi performance half cuts/engines are sold to Malaysia as that is where Protons are made (with no turbo variant sold there). You can imagine therefore that there are so many guys in Malaysia wanting to upgrade, and as such we (and most of the rest of the world!) are simply priced out of the market in Japan. If and when we get them, on rare occasions, we have to pays heaps for them. Sad but true! "

See, the Gen 2 motor is so rare that it cost as much as a E4 motor. It also happens that the state owned monopoly of Proton dominates their market at a rate over 85%. 8 out of 10 vehicles in that country drives a Proton. Imagine the demand from JPN if they can't get their hands on a VR4 motor.
