Mufferless exhaust?

I'm planning to take the muffler off and start the car just to see how loud it is and what it sounds like... My friend's STi is damn loud... but it sounds sexy... i wouldn't mind that hopefully our lancers sound right though... I have a FED spec lancer

Has anyone done this already? Any suggestions on taking the muffler off?

I guess this would be testing to see if i want to make a custom "Works AB Exhaust"

Well, you're probably going to want something there in the muffler's place to help maintain back pressure. So basically you can get a custom Axle Back made, or buy one of the several available aftermarket ones. Just having an open pipe like that on an N/A car can reduce performance. Its ok for your friend's STi because its turbo, you want as little back pressure as possible.

like what was mentioned earlier
You need back pressure, removal of your muffler will result in power loss in the TQ department. This may have some benefit in the honda theory of exhaust flow but not for Mitsubishi. There is a prototype retrofit design of the WORKS Exhaust in the works, when its completed it maybe something you want to look into if that is your thing.

I removed my muffler before, had to ghetto rig it a bit to create a hanger for it, however it did actually sound very sexy... in my opinion. I asked this same question however and was given the above answers and then some.

People also expressed the concerns of exhaust leaking into the car itself since the exhaust is not being directed outside the vehicle. Take a picture of the joint between the muffler and pipe, i didnt and now im worried that its not on their tight enough. If you could also send me a copy of that for my reference that would be great, i requested one but never recieved it.

Eitherway, know its LOUD but i feel our car to far too slow to be making that much noise.

looked into this a bit more and turns out it's illegal to drive a car without a muffler... so i won't be doing it anyway..

It is good to know that the muffler will actually help me out in the performance department though... I won't mind not gaining anything but losing isn't too appealing haha.

Was only looking into this to try and save money on the muffler part if no muffler was ok with me.. but since it's not.. guess I'll be waiting a bit longer and shopping around a bit more..

Thanks for the input guys

well maybe its illegal in Calgary but im here in Cali and its not illegal as long as the sound isnt too loud. i removed muffler, then went to auto parts place and bought a universal hanger, and a down pipe so the exhaust wouldnt bee blowing at the bumper.

When I got the stock muffler cut off prior to putting on my custom AB Flowmaster; the sound to me was nothing to write home about. It was not much louder then with the muffler on. Maybe just a little deeper tone, but nothing that would want to make me keep it that way.

bahhh now im gettin mixed comments.. guess i'll have to do it myself...

Realized that pretty much any aftermarket exhaust is illegal... so I don't really care.. my friend has never gotten in any shti for his exhaust so I'm sure I'll be fine..

Just have a custom one made like the RRM with a magnaflow muffler or something. It still looks pretty much stock, you shouldn't get any trouble with it.

What about the two mufflers/resonators before the rear muffler. Has anyone deleted those yet. If so what kind of difference was noticed, both performance and sound? Thanks

We teied this back hen we built the Gymkhana Lancer for Mitsubishi. First drive arond the block and we new it sucked. very poor power. The car was slow as A$$. That is why we made a proper axelback exhaust. Don't make a pipe and don't BUY one. People who have bought them call down her all the time to get our axelback because they are taking OFF the pipe tip thingy!!!!

well i did mine one step at a time... First aftermarket muffler. Then removed resonators... then changed intermediate piping to 2 and a quarter... then threw a glasspack on and had custom side tips added... sounds lovely. SO IMO keep under around 2.25 and she"ll sound sexy with minimum to NO gains... in all honesty, as far as this aspect, I just wanted mine to sound good. She'll only be fast with a turbo and that day is a while away...
