Ignition Coil Clicking?

It seems like either one or both of the ignition coils in my 04 ES makes a repetitive clicking noise at idle. I don't know if it's normal or not, just wondering if maybe something is wrong. I replaced plugs last year and wires less than a year ago. Thanks for any help.

Are you sure that it's your coils and not your injectors?

No, I'm not sure. Easiest way to tell? If it is the injectors, is there a fix?

The easiest way to tell would be to get your ear in close and decipher where it's coming from. It's common for the injectors to "click" as they are working. The "clicking" you're hearing might also be your lifters ticking. Does the clicking seem louder at a cold start and sort of quiets down as the engine warms up? Is your oil level good?

It's the lifters. Mitsubishi lifters are notorious for this across many models. As the mileage on your engine goes up they get clogged and dirty and need to be cleaned. For them to be cleaned they need to be removed from the cylinder head and soaked in diesel fuel.

Nice. I'll have to do this. Pretty simple? Any suggestions?

It's a fairly involved process. You need to semi-disassemble the head. See the FSM page below.

I think I could probably handle it. Is it easy to find the torque specs for when it's time to re-assemble?

My car does that too but I found out it was the egr solenoids. One of them clicks like its keeping time. Try unplugging on to see if it stops.
