Downpipe as first exhaust mod?

OK, I just worked out a deal to buy a slightly used Buschur downpipe from another board member. My main concern is that I haven't touched the exhaust on my car yet. Is this a good idea as a first exhaust mod, or should I leave it in the garage until I get the high flow cat and catback?

It definitely won't hurt. And it'll just be one less piece to install once you get the rest of your exhaust parts done! And it won't have any negative side effects on the car, either, so get that bad boy installed!

Cool. That's basically what I figured, but I am an idiot. Always good to ask first.

This is untrue. You will get no performance out of it. Remember as with most things it's only going to be as good as your weakest link in the exhaust sytem..and you are still running the stocker and cats. Also note if you wanna put it on as said before your not going to hamper anything, but dont go around acting like it gave you 5ponies or something. Just some helpful info.

Sorry Mobius, but your very wrong. It will definately help, not 20 horse, but any opening up in our exhaust help. Did you ever look at your downpipe, It flattens to like 1" to go under the frame.
I just noticed, you don't even have a Lancer, enough said.

My down pipe does not flatten out to 1" sorry. How is it helping with a stock cat and "stick" exhaust. He is not going to gain anything from doing this. He would in conjuction perhaps with a complete system. So tell me for my own knowledge, if you know then: how is this helping. I mean really besides maybe saving a little weight. Dont tell me he is gaining 5 horses from this now. And what is with that last sentence there?

I do see what you are saying dont get me wrong. Replacing the stocker IS a step in the right direction but I was letting him know that DONT expect any "real world" diference. You are not going to notice anything. If he dyno'ed the car I would expect to see no real diference. Now If he were to couple that with a high flo cat and cat back that was designed for the lancer then yes I would expect to see some gains. remember mods work in conjuction. To give you an example: With my car I saw more of a gain with the 2.5 DP when running with my APEXi 2.5 catback than I did with the catback alone. But we are talking somewhat apples and oranges when it comes to turbo vs NA exhaust apps. That is why I stated yes I agree go ahead and put it on. Its not doing him any harm but it is not really doing much either.

Mobius - I do thank you for the input. I'm not expecting to make any real HP gains. I just know that this is the first step until I can afford the cat-back and test pipe. My whole reason for posting was just to make sure that I wouldn't hurt anything.

But from what I've heard, fkrzo said it best - the stock Lancer downpipe is not the best equipment. So I don't think he was insulting you, just commenting that our downpipes are probably worse than the stock one on your car.

Pics of the stock downpipe. Thinking about it, that 1" number probably isn't to far off considering the bulk of the unit is made of heat shielding. Also take note of the inlet pic. Totally inefficient and really surprised me to see something that sloppy.

Only 30? Heh. Yeah, I must be pretty lucky - not only is mine just like yours, it even came from a guy living at your house. Coincidence, eh?

Nope, not on yet. Gotta get some free time and then find someone with a garage (heated, preferably) I can use. I'm hoping I can bolt it on this weekend.
