Road Race or not

Here is a pic of a turbo set up a friend of mine gave to me. I was told it is an early road race version. There are not many detailed pics of the actual turbo set up available on line. (Close-Ups) I am going to try to fabricate this myself. Our shop just got a new welder, so I am going to put it to the test. I have heard alot people doing custom turbo setup. Road race's set up is proven, but I dont want to spend that money. I already have a turbo and plan use it. Its a Garrett T25. I know that the spool up will be different. It wont be near as fast as the T28 and die off a few Rpm,s faster than the t28. I am also pretty sure the first Turbo UsS LAncer used the T-25. I would like some imput from you all on this, What do you think? Is this a early road race kit? I know the the waste gate flanges on the Road Race kits are at the bottom of the pipes. This one is at the Top.

I dont know about you all- but that doesnt look very difficult. I have a little welding skill-I took it in high school and a quick crash course in Army so I can use the Auto shop tools. But in my opinion, after lookin at this, I dont think that it is worth the money you have to pay out to Road Race. No offense to them, cause I really like those guys and they have been very helpful with my LAncer in the Last year and a half. I even bought my JE pistons from them. I had all the flanges cut to match my turbo already, and I had the end pieces made on the boost side, one of the pieces is Billet. Got the BOV, and wastegate. All I have to do is weld it all up. Seriously what do you all think. Anyone else who has done this let me know I would be very interested in talking to you.

What do you plan on doing about fueling?

originally I had planned to go with the reflash-since it is not available I plan at first to go with a fuel rail and a fuel pressure regulator. If that doesnt work I will add bigger injectors. I have a few friends w/S-AFC and I have installed a few. If I have to go that route I will.

I want to see someone make a custom exhaust manifold to a 16 or 18g turbo. That would smash I think... But that set up will work the only difference between that set up and road/race's is that the the wastegate is welded lower on the up-pipe and not vented back into the down pipe. Other then that looks pretty much the same to me. The first turbo done was by the road/race engineering guys and they used a t-25. i was the 2nd (first one done by rrm) and i got the t28.

What are the advantages/disadvantages in venting back into the down pipe?

First one is not RRM's I don't think. I'm pretty sure it belongs to motojoeusa. Custom job, very well done for a DIY, and he hardly ever posts. Try checking his registry.

As for my thoughts...go for it. But if you're going to do it I'd recommend making a tubular manifold out of mild steel and then getting it coated.

Obviously it's gonna be a lot harder, but your turbo should spool more efficiently, especially if you might swap out for a T28 or larger turbo later on. For the T25 I doubt it'll make much of a difference initially.

Whatever you decide, good luck and may the fuel be with you.

Oh, and I doubt there's any difference in whether you plumb the wastegate into the downpipe aside from increased exhaust flow and volume. Venting the wastegate to atmosphere can be pretty loud though I'm sorta assuming you already know that.

Man that site is awesome. I am going to try to do that. I am going to make the flange this weekend. I will use the gasket I kept from the piston install as a pattern. I noticed you have a equal lenth header and I talked to you about it before. Are you going to run a turbo? Have you had any heat problems?

Yeah, I came across it while looking for injector info and I read everything on it (and retained a little of it too ).

When my car was running it was running a T3 Super 60. Heat problems? Not that I'm aware of. She does run hotter, but no problems caused by it. Fuel problems though? By the score!

looks like something that would prove to be a very good setup and make you a nice little fast car, personaly i like how my wastegate is vented to atmosphere, doesnt bother me or anyone else insid ehte cabin, and lets outsiders know that theres something VERy different about my car but i wouldnt stop with just a fuel rail and fuel pressure regulator, from everything ive seen, pump and injectors are needed to get that gas in there, good luck!
