I have an 08 lancer i was driving on the highway noticed a tapping metal on metal sound while accelerating and my check engine light came on. Then a few blocks away it went back off. The noise subsided mostly. I got where i was going then left. As i was heading back home the light came back on and the noise returned along with poor performance, the car was idling rough as i pulled into an auto parts store and the engine was gurgling as i cut it off. Hooked up a diagnostic tool and got p0303 cylinder 3 misfire, p0011 intake camshaft position timing over advanced bank 1/ intake vvt system target error, p0014 exhaust camshaft position timing over advanced bank 1/exhaust vvt system target error, p0017 camshaft position crankshaft position correlration bank 1 sensor b/sensor phase error, and p0725 engine speed input circuit.

Now my first question is what is bank 1? It's a 4 cylinder so are there 2 banks in a 2.0L mivec?

What could this be? I see it's likely the vvt system. Where can i find a diagram of this system? I couldn't find one in the service manual. So far i have changed the oil, it was dirty and had metal in it as in it was shiny. Changed all 4 spark plugs and checked that the coils gave a spark when touched to metal and cranking the engine. Took off valve cover and inspected timing chain. It was tight no slack and the mating and timing marks lined up as did the orange chain links. Couldn't see the bottom crankshaft gear though but assume if the cam gears line up that should too right?

Where should i go from here? I am on a limited budget so would prefer doing it myself if i can, would take it in if this is likely to be warrantied under the 80k emissions warranty or the 100k powertrain warranty. That's all i have left as its at 71,000 miles. I've read a lot and it seems lancers have this general sort of errors a lot. At least generally. But i haven't been able to find specific enough information on this. Thank you for any help.

 

Oh and also after i hooked up diagnostic tool it would start and glug back off. Haven't been able to get it to start up now even after changing plugs.

 

Any ideas? Does anyone have a diagram of how the mivec vvt system works in the 2 liter 4 cylinder engine? Really need some insight here.

 

This should be under warranty. Get it to the dealer to check it.
