Help with Exhaust

Ok, I want to replace my FULL exhaust. Meaning _everything_ except the main catalytic converter. Now my question is... how many peices is this?

Here's the parts I _think_ I need to swap, tell me if I am wrong about any of them, or if I am missing a peice.

1) Header
2) Downpipe?
3) Straight/Test Pipe? (The part that deletes the first cat converter)
4) Catback Exhaust Kit

Now am I missing anything? Is there a tube or pipe (not including the main Cat) that I am missing?

Also, if I get headers and a downpipe, do I need a straight/test pipe anymore? Or does the down-pipe take care of the straight pipe section?

Anyone who actually KNOWS what they're talking about, and helps me out, would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance for any advice.

- Jason

P.S. My car is a 2002 Lancer OZ-Rally , in case you didn't want to look left.

yeah, you wouldnt want to swap out your stock headers if you want to keep the 1st cat. you could go w/ a new header and cat. back system... putting all that junk back on isnt too much work.

Header removes the 1st cat. Downpipe removes the atrophied stock downpipe. Testpipe/highflow cat removes the 2nd cat. Catback piping removes the stock exhaust piping.

I have straight piping running right now. RPW header, RPW downpipe, custom testpipe, JIC-Magic catback. The only piping that isn't completely straight-through is the resonator and muffler on my catback.

Not sure what size the runners are on the header, but the downpipe is 2.5".

Yeah, but you're not keeping the second cat if you replace it with anything, including a highflow cat.

Which one is better? Intalling a whole new exhaust system or just welding on a muffler? After all an exhaust system is nothing but a long pipe and muffler!!

def a whole new exhuast system, just a muffler doesnt increase power at all. its a long pipe that has a large diameter, amking it less restrictive.

You'll definitely get more power from a full exhaust. Welding on a muffler will help with the exhaust tone, but not much if anything at all in the means of power gains. And like pgmike said, the gains come from increasing the diameter from the stock piping to something larger (2.25" or 2.5").
