Possible bad news on US Evo

Here is some info someone got about the Evo:

"according to motor trend's report from (i think) the detroit auto shows, mitsubishi is now saying the U.S.-spec EVO VII will "only" be 250+ HP and minus the active yaw control and some other electronics b/c they want a bigger fuel tank for the U.S. market. and leaving out these electronics will keep the car under the targeted 30K price tag. :-( "

I have read two seperate reports from people that it WILL NOT have AYC due to the fuel tank (want it bigger for US cars) and because there may be a concern on reliabilty because the system was designed for Japanese durabilty cycle which is less (mileage wise) than North American duty cycle.

Lets pray it turns out to be a false rumor.

Once again....I think I'm just gonna wait until I hear somethin from Mitsubishi officially....

Until that day I'll consider every friggin report I hear to be a yank on my chain.

You should be happy if the car doesn't have AYC!!!
I have it and it is the biggest pain when it comes to driving fast....
I want to get rid of it ASAP.

Why is it a pain when driving fast? Please explain it to those of us who have never experienced driving an Evo.

Basically it's an active driving aid that will shift torque between the left and right rear wheel to keep the car from oversteering and understeering. When your at the limit the car will oscillate between slight oversteer and understeer which is a very weird feeling, I'm still not used to it. Also it can be very abrupt when it starts correcting and is quite unnerving. I would rather be able to go sideways by just letting the car drift naturally than this weird feeling of being corrected.

OMG, Michaelk I saw video clips of a TME doing that. I wasn't sure what was going on and thought the driver was doing something weird.

But correct me if I'm wrong some people, like the AYC because there are some ham-fisted EVO drivers too I'm sure who might otherwise end up in some kind of snap-oversteer situation that they can't correct fast enough.

So I'm thinking it feels the same way as it does when my rear winter tyres are underinflated and the sidewalls float from side to side mid-turn!

hehehe, that's kind of what it feels like...
The thing is, unless you've set-up your Evo with some ridiculous oversteer-inducing degrees of toe out or something, there isn't any snap-oversteer with the Evo, it just goes into a very progressive slide if set-up properly otherwise it will tend to understeer. But I guess some people like the AYC....

Wouldn't it be difficult to remove AYC seeing how it is integrated with the ACD and the ABS systems?

Wasn't the AYC standard on all EVO's of all trims since the EVO4? If this is the case then Mitsu would have to do more work to make a USDM EVO7 without the AYC unit... even for a EVO7 RS/RS2 which does not come with the ACD unit stock.

Oops sorry as I'm experiencing a small bout of acronym overload here! I am quite at this time... need time to digest this!

Makes sense then why they wouldn't include the AYC on U.S. cars. If it does indeed take up more space and there is a need for a fuel tank bigger than 12 gal. here in the states. From the sounds of it though I won't be as disappointed now if it turns out that they really aren't going to have AYC.

Damn, Claudius!!!! It isn't that easy then, is it!!!!
It must be cheaper to change all the shafts and put in a rear LSD, surely??
