yeah its not hard to do yourself. i just have no tools at college and am anxious to get it done without having to wait 2 weeks. but i told them it should only take an hour or 2 and the guy said "then it is going to be at least between $80-$120" so I figured screw it, thats more than the part itself. so I'm getting it done this weekend at home for free. you might want to get your own quotes from where you live cause i'm sure they will vary greatly.

i'm hoping to install mine after my final today. under the car with my right hand holding a screwdriver on the flywheel and my left hand with a torque wrench on the pulley bolt. yay.

yeah, the crank. and you don't want to turn the crank in the counter-clockwise direction(i think, i'd have to check again). that's a no-no.

correct i believe it messes with the timing if you do so. not sure though.

i believe so. one side of the timing belt sprocket is the tension side. turn it the wrong way and you can jump a tooth on the sprocket.

when installing Vasily's the crank starting to spin ever so slightly when the bolt was being to stubborn to come out. took the extension off of the air gun and put my foot on the stock pulley. that stopped the moving completely...or mitsu makes a sort of "yolk holder" that helps hold it in place if you can get one...its pretty much useless though.

RRM recommends an air gun. dunno how many of you got one of those. what i personally have done is prop one of the spokes of the pulley with an "L" tire iron or similar. i dunno how the aluminum pulley will take to that method so i'll only recommend it for taking the stock pulley off. for putting the pulley on, i would jam one of the spokes of the flywheel through the small plate under the transmission with a screwdriver of sorts. or maybe just the teeth. whichever.

if anyone has any objections, please post. maybe you'll get me to stop my retarded ways

clever idea. it should work to get the pulley off.

when you install your new one, if you intend on using the same method as the removal, i would recommend some sort of padding between the bar and the pulley. (maybe if you splice a larger diameter vacuum line and put it around the bar)

i would just hate to see the pulley get bent, chipped, etc. rotating objects that aren't balanced properly tend to get a little excited.

good luck with your method let us know how it works.

impetus19 - there are timing marks. Check them.

I know Subaru ain't Mitsu, but when I did mine, the instructions said to put the car in 5th and stand on the brake. I don't know what it does, but I did it...

you have nothing to worry about. when we did yours it literally moved about 1cm before i stuck my foot on it. if it were moved you'd notice screwed up timing.

keeps the crank from turning by locking it with the transmission. 5th gear applies less force on the brakes in relation to the force at the crank making the brakes more effective at keeping the crank from moving. that sounds like a good idea if you've got a friend to help. i might try that instead. never thought of it.
