need help!! emission test fail
hi all
I am a internatoinal student in chicago and I have a 02 OZ Lancer,
I went to emission test last week and I fail the test, the report shows my ODB
system have problem,so I took my car to a technician and he say I fail because
my "Check Engine soon" is on, and he use some thing like a computer to plug
under my stree wheel and told me my cat is broken and I have to change and it
will cost usd$500~1000
I just wonder do I really have to change it to pass the emssion test or there has
a better way to do it!
thanks you guys!

How many miles do you have on it... I could be wrong, but I think there is a federal mandate of 8 years/80,000 miles on emmisions now... May not apply to that model though...
What did you expect with a "Service Engine Soon" light on after you ignored it im sure for many months/miles.... You watied until emissions testing to have that light checked out? Could have originally been something as cheap as an O2 sensor and now you've burned up the cat since the car has been running in limp mode (ie rich) for as long as that light has been on...
Go to a muffler shop, have the proper cat welded in, have the light reset and go back for testing... Go to autozone and have them scan the codes for you to make sure you don't also need an o2 sensor...

Since you are soo close to the 80k/8yr marker with your mileage, I would change the intake back to stock (its only 15 minutes of your life) and head to the dealer... I would only change the intake so you don't have to deal with the headache of a "what-if" scenario since the intake is considered an emmisions item (at least in my non-mitsu dealership)...
But yes, the cat shoud be warrantied within that mileage/time....

i have an intake on and they didnt even mention it. The emissions coverage is basically your headers back, your cat, piping and mufflers are emissions, nothing before that counts.
Take it to the dealer, tell them you got a CEL, and the cat is bad, they will run the code, see the problem and replace the cat. all for free. if they try to charge you, tell em to **** off cos its all under warranty
