a question for you exhaust nuts...

so ... there's this guy that everyone has been telling me to go to - he's really really good and really knowledgeable...

he's familiar with lancers, and with subarus - and is well known around here with the rally guys.

and he has offered to make me a custom longtube header...

now ... i'm asking you all - should i? or should i stick with a known name like RRM? and what should i watch out for? like what do i need to know here about all this?

- Tony

get the header! it will be exactly the same as the RRM header performance wise. But cheaper. lol.

you will probably have to get a CEL eliminator though.

also make sure you take some pics.

MUCH cheaper actually, this guy's willing and actually wanting to do it as soon as i buy the new magnaflow HFC from RRM...

i figured i'd buy the HFC and a CEL eliminator from RRM - he said he'd install it with the O2 sensor already there, fab up the new header and add a bung for the CEL eliminator ... all for about $100, a case of beer, and some pizza.

don't bother with the HFC. it is a waste of money, and makes little or no difference. Spend the money on an intake, or a catback.

infact you should ask your friend to make you a custom exhaust too. from the header back. lol.

$100 for a header is excellent though. nicely done

^Yeah, for reals! Tell him just to do an entire exhaust for the car and give him $200.

the only reason i was gonna replace the HFC was because of that damned P0421 code and that most folks told me i needed to replace - especially for emissions testing here in WI...

...i'd much rather have the entire exhaust, or UDP, or intake, or strut braces, etc., etc., etc. ...

i really hate money right now.

P0421 has nothing to do with the cat you'd replace with a HFC. it's a code for the 1st cat in your header.

don't bother. the custom exhaust setup your friend can make, will be just as good performance wise as any RRM setup.

However you should buy a cherry bomb muffler, and weld it in as a resonator, and then put a magnaflow as an actual muffler. It will sound bad ***.

then with any cash you have left over, go to autozone and buy an MAF adapter, and K&N filter.

Then start working on your suspension and save up for a turbo.

oh i was only checking it out for other parts and such, like the UDP i've been eyeing up...

looks like i gotta wait a week for him to fit me in and get the header made up... will i need the CEL eliminator for this?

and horribly off topic, but crypto - that's all i gotta do for the "intake"? - just remove the stock airbox and replace it at the end with a MAF adapter and filter?

about that intake thing...that will actually give you some gains? and you don't need the whole aluminum piping and whatnot?! if that's the case why do people waste $150+ on SRI?

the pulley really isn't all that fantastic. It's alright, helps a little, but you should Just save your money for a turbo or suspension upgrades.

for the intake, yes, all you gotta do is go get a $15 intake adapter, and stick a filter on the end, you just reuse that stock black intake tube.

and you will most likely need a CEL eliminator, see what happens after you install the header

it will give like a 1-2hp gain, and a little better throttle response.

You don't need aluminum piping, test where done and showed that the stock piping actually performs better.

And the reason people waste $150+ on intakes is because they are stupid. They basically are just buying for the name.
no matter which intake you get, the small gain is the same, from a $200 K&N intake, to a $50 ebay intake. The only thing that matters is the filter

on the pulley, fair enough - thanks ... i know i want to turbo, BAD - but i also want to pay this off first (just in case)

and on the intake tip - thanks, i thought that would work but i was having a hell of a time with the search function, i kept putting in "DIY intake" or "DIY SRI" and didn't get anything...

i'll probably pick one up to be safe, but you're right - best to wait and see.

thanks for all your help!
