Advice on mods
Advice on mods
Good day I am new to this forum well actually to any forum. I have a little more than basic knowledge with working on cars. After extensive research I have compiled a list of mods I would like to do. The following include part location I plan on purchasing from and price.
Product - place- price.
Spark plugs- Pulstar- $100
Fujita intake- Auto City Imports- $185
Pulley- Road Race Motorsports- $119
Exhaust- Road Race Motorsports- $329
Oil Catch Can- Speed Corps- $65
FED Header- Road Race Motorsports- $399
HID Xenon lights- Auto City Imports- $300 (Dual high and low beams add $85)
CF EVO X style Hood-Auto City Imports- $589
CF Trunk Lid- Auto City Imports- $540
CF Engine accents- Road Race Motorsports- $327
Spings and Sway Bar- Works- $449
Also some advice on wheels. Im not sure what wheels can fit on the Lancer if anyone knows Please let me know. These are three rims I am debating on getting. Let me know how well you think they would go with the charcoal grey Lancer.

I currently do not own a Lancer but I test drove a GTS before I deployed and fell in love with it I haven’t been excited about a car before. I plan on purchasing the 09 Lancer once I return from overseas and would like any advice, reviews of products and tips anyone can offer. I don’t want the works exhaust due to it being so loud and looking like an oversized coffee can sticking out the back. I want a clean good sounding exhaust. I thank you in advance for yalls advice.

Just a notice on the exhaust... alot of different exhausts have been showing up with rust quite early in their life (like nosman's 3week old RRM exhaust)
Complaints on greddy have also appeared...
Just a heads up

I've tried to email RRM about the rust problem but so far no answers. Im sure since there are numerous occurences with this problems they are working on an answer. Course the pully both stock and RRM are having signs of major wear only after a few thousand miles. I cant wait to see the answer to that.
For the spark plugs this kind shows gains that normal sparkplugs do not. As for the catch can I understand I will not gain any power or anything it is mainly to prolong the life of the engine. Sorry should have specified the reasons behind those. If anyone can tell me anything proving or disproving those theories I would love to hear them.
What proof is there that these plugs increase power on a lancer? The only "proof" I've seen that these plugs are better has been in magazine ads using a 350Z which is a completely different car. We don't know the experimental conditions and as far as we know, they could be doctored. Some guys on this board have tried the plugs and hated them, they had to be replaced within a few days. A catch can won't increase engine life, I see no reason to believe this.
+1 on the plugs. There are plugs that are just as effective, and have a much much more reliable track record, and are half the price.
and the oil catch can is a decent mod, however it's really only "needed" for turbo'd cars. On an N/A lancer, you probably don't need it.
also there are a few mods you may wanna ditch and get a set of coilovers instead. They will give a much bigger improvement in handling and how your car drives. Easily one of the best modifications you can do to any car.
and the third set of rims are my fav

from what is on the pulstar site and a few people said they got a little more HP like 2 or 3 and better MPG. http://www.pulstarplug.com as for the catch can a few mechanics back home have told me it catches the sluge that can harm the engine. Im not 100% sure about these claims which is why Im looking for some factual information from people that have actually used them for extended periods of time not just a few days since it takes more than a few days to really see improvements especially in MPG. Why did the guys that have used the plugs not like them do you know?
i know a couple of Evo owners actually had serious issues and had to remove them.
Keep in mind companies are always gonna say there product is great. And the info on their website is gonna be bias and in some cases completely fabricated. There is no way for you to know if there supposed "dyno results" are in fact true at all. The best thing to do is to search around the forums and find actual people who have used the product in the past, and have a non-bias view of the product and can give an honest review.
The improvements seen with those plugs are most likely going to be the same as what you'd see by getting other plugs at half the cost.
The oil catch can does exactly what you say. But it's not really that big a deal on an N/A engine. The amount of "sludge" is very small. You can get it, but i would put it further down on your list of stuff to buy.
Which goes for a lot of parts in your list. There are several parts out there that will improve your car a lot more than what you have listed. Again, coilovers being one of those mods.

plugs: Denso Iridium Plugs: http://stores.speedcorps.com/Detail.bok?no=297
and i think there are some NGK ones out there too. Best thing to do would just be to go to Autozone and see what they have. They will have them the cheapest and have an exact list of what will fit your car
Coilovers are aftermarket replacement struts/springs.
The only ones currently available for the 08 Lancer are from Megan Racing
http://stores.speedcorps.com/Detail.bok?no=358
They are stronger and stiffer than stock. The megan coilovers have height and dampening adjustment. So you can lower your car, to lower the center of gravity, and also adjust the stiffness/harshness of the ride. So you can have a softer ride for daily driving, or a harder stiffer ride for autocrossing etc.
if you do some searching you will find a lot of info about coilovers. I have a set of NEX coilovers on my OZ. And they are easily the best modification I've made to my car. Most people will agree that right after a turbo, these should be at the top of anyones modifcation list

What other parts are you refering to? This is where Im in need of advice. I have a little more than basic car maintnence, I have next to no experience on performance parts.
EDIT: oh and I like the third set of wheels more, the firs is ok too.
skip the pulley, plugs, CF engine accents, CF trunk lid and catch can. And you will easily have enough for the Coilovers ($850 shipped)
plus you will save money by not getting the springs

I would suggest you read the FAQ in my sig as it explains a lot of mods out there and what they do (ie. what are coilovers, what do they do, what is a header, etc.). Coilovers are probably the best suspension option for you although there are some fixed perch struts that put most coilovers to shame (ie. prodrive or ohlins, neither of which are available for the lancer).
